  • Postgraduate qualification in marine ecology or environmental management is an advantage.
  • Experience with marine ecological field methods, species or habitat identification, ecological data analysis, scientific writing and technical reporting.
  • Previous experience managing projects or work packages in an environmental consultancy setting would be highly regarded.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake technical work as a marine ecologist for biodiversity assessments, EIAs, monitoring plans, and other studies.
  • Plan, manage and deliver marine ecological surveys and monitoring programmes, including field logistics and sampling.
  • Conduct or support intertidal and marine field surveys.
  • Compile, analyse and interpret ecological and environmental monitoring data; prepare reports and client deliverables.
  • Support project management activities: planning, budgeting, scheduling, QA, risk management.
  • Contribute to business development relating to marine ecology and habitat restoration.
  • Liaise with clients, regulators, contractors and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate within multidisciplinary teams and share knowledge.

Job description

DHI is a global leader in solving complex water, climate, coastal and biodiversity-related challenges. We are seeking a confident, organised and self-motivated marine environmental professional to support and help lead our marine ecology and environmental projects. The role will involve managing and delivering marine ecological assessments, environmental monitoring programmes, environmental impact assessments, habitat restoration and applied research projects, while working closely with clients, regulators, contractors and multi disciplinary project teams.

We are looking for someone who is technically strong, comfortable working in the field and able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced consultancy environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake technical work as a marine ecologist for marine biodiversity assessments, environmental impact assessments, environmental management and monitoring plans, and other marine and coastal environmental studies.
  • Plan, manage and deliver marine ecological surveys and monitoring programmes, including field logistics, survey design, data collection, sample handling, health and safety planning, and coordination with internal and external project teams.
  • Conduct or support both intertidal and marine field surveys.
  • Compile, analyse and interpret ecological and environmental monitoring data, and prepare clear, technically robust reports, proposals, method statements, presentations and client deliverables.
  • Support project management activities, including work planning, budgeting, scheduling, quality assurance, risk management and coordination of deliverables.
  • Contribute to business development opportunities relating to marine ecology, coastal development, environmental impact assessment, nature-based solutions and habitat restoration.
  • Liaise professionally with clients, regulatory agencies, contractors, subcontractors and other project stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and share technical knowledge with colleagues.
Education and Experience
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in marine ecology, environmental consulting, environmental impact assessment, ecological monitoring or a related field.
  • Degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Life Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Post graduate qualification in marine ecology, environmental management, coastal management, biodiversity conservation or a related discipline would be an advantage.
  • Experience with marine ecological field methods, species or habitat identification, ecological data analysis, scientific writing and technical reporting.
  • Previous experience managing projects or work packages in an environmental consultancy setting would be highly regarded.
Knowledge andSkills
  • Strong understanding of tropical marine and coastal ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, ecological impact assessment and environmental management issues.
  • Experience working in marine environments such as coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, intertidal habitats, subtidal habitats or benthic environments.
  • Physically capable and medically fit to undertake marine fieldwork, including long field days, boat-based work and work in challenging environmental conditions.
  • Rescue SCUBA Diver certification, or equivalent, with experience diving in limited visibility and strong currents; commercial or scientific diving experience would be anadvantage.
  • Knowledge ofenvironmental monitoring, impact assessment, mitigation planning, marine habitat restoration and environmental management practices.
  • Good analytical, report-writing, presentation and communication skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to present technical information clearly.
  • Confidence working with clients, developers, contractors, government agencies, NGOs and other external stakeholders.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.
  • Flexible and willing to support project needs that may occasionally require weekend work, public holiday work, early starts, late finishes or overseas travel.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of ecological data management, basic statistical analysis, GIS or other relevant analytical tools would be an advantage.
  • Self-motivated, curious and willing to learn new skills, with a strong interest in marine biodiversity conservation, applied ecology and environmental consultancy.
