Job summary

Onerway is seeking an Engineering Director to own the technical strategy and leadership of the Payments Platform, setting architecture and roadmap while growing the engineering organization. The role is hands-on and central to the business, partnering with Commercial, Product, Risk, Operations and Compliance to scale the platform globally.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years in software engineering with 5+ in leadership, a track record of building high-performing teams, and strong fintech domain

Responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for Onerway's Payments Platform.
• Lead and grow engineering organization: manage, coach, and develop engineers and engineering leads; build a culture of ownership, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.
• Drive technical architecture and platform excellence: set standards for reliability, security, scalability, and developer productivity across the stack.
• Deliver with speed and accountability: set KPIs, implement engineering best practices and processes, and ensure high-quality, on-time outcomes.
• Align engineering with business outcomes: partner with Commercial, Product, Risk, Operations and Compliance to support growth and regulatory needs.
• Champion AI-augmented development: drive adoption of AI tooling across the SDLC to raise velocity and quality.
• Maintain full-stack fluency: stay conversant across backend, frontend, security, databases, DevOps, and QA.
• Right-size delivery: decide when to ship lean MVPs vs fully hardened products.

Job description

We're looking for an Engineering Director to own the technical strategy and leadership of Onerway's Payments Platform. This is a hands-on leadership role at the center of the business: you'll set the architecture and roadmap for the systems that move our merchants' money, build and grow the engineering organization behind them, and partner closely with Commercial, Product, Risk, Operations and Compliance to make sure the platform scales with the business.

Responsibilities

• Own the end-to-end technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for Onerway's Payments Platform — spanning payins, virtual accounts, payouts, FX, treasury, issuing, and settlement — ensuring it scales reliably across global markets.
• Lead and grow a world-class engineering organization: manage, coach, and develop engineers and engineering leads; build a culture of ownership, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.
• Drive technical architecture and platform excellence: set high standards for reliability, security, scalability, and developer productivity across the stack.
• Deliver with speed and accountability: set clear KPIs, implement engineering best practices and processes, and hold the org accountable for high-quality, on-time outcomes.
• Align engineering with business outcomes: partner closely with Commercial, Product, Risk, Operations and Compliance so platform capabilities directly support growth, merchant experience, and regulatory requirements.
• Champion AI-augmented development: drive adoption of AI tooling across the SDLC — coding agents, automated testing, and AI-assisted QA — to raise engineering velocity and quality.
• Maintain full-stack fluency: stay conversant across backend, frontend, security, databases, DevOps, and QA to guide architectural trade-offs credibly across the whole platform.
• Right-size delivery to the problem: know when to ship a lean MVP versus invest in a fully hardened product, and apply the right approach depending on the nature of each initiative.

Who You Are

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering leadership.
• A proven track record of building and scaling high-performing engineering teams.
• Strong product thinking, with the ability to partner closely with product and commercial stakeholders to shape roadmaps and prioritize delivery.
• Demonstrated ability to operate and deliver in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
• Experience in fintech, payments, or a similarly regulated industry is a strong plus.
