Their duties and responsibilities include:
- Operating and driving a lorry to transport goods and materials over specified routes to local or distant points according to a time schedule
- Inspecting vehicles for mechanical items and safety issues and perform preventative maintenance
- Complying with lorry driving rules and regulations (size, weight, route designations, parking and break periods) as well as with company policies and procedures
- Planning routes and meeting delivery schedules
- Loading and unloading cargo from the lorry, often with the help of a forklift or other machinery
- Collecting and verifying delivery instructions, including signatures from customers
- Reporting defects, accidents or violations
- Maintaining a logbook of their driving activities to ensure compliance with federal regulations governing the rest and work periods for operators
- Keeping the lorry and associated equipment clean and in good working order
- Communicating effectively with clients or dispatchers about delays or problems on the route
