Job description

Thermo Fisher Scientific is looking for an experienced Database Administrator to support microarray manufacturing and design. The successful candidate will design, implement and maintain PostgreSQL databases to support data storage and trending for microarray manufacturing, quality control (QC), and custom microarray designs. High uptime and fast query performance will be critically important. New data modeling will be required in collaboration with laboratory scientists, manufacturing specialists, and our experienced data modeling and database design team.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain PostgreSQL databases supporting microarray manufacturing and QC workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to model and integrate new data structures for evolving experimental and production requirements.
  • Ensure database performance, security, and availability, with emphasis on uptime and fast data retrieval.
  • Develop and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies to safeguard critical manufacturing data.
  • Monitor database performance and proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks or failures.
  • Implement and enforce data governance standards, schemas, and best practices for consistent and scalable database management.
  • Support data trending, analytics, and reporting tools used by manufacturing and R&D teams.
Education/Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, IT, or related fields.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience administering PostgreSQL or Oracle databases (PostgresSQL preferred), including standing up new databases and recovering from system and database outages. Knowledge from mySQL is a plus.
  • Experience with pg_tablespaces and setting up custom database environments
  • Familiarity with database backup methods, hot replication, restoration from backup
  • Fluency in Unix shell operations, particularly in GNU/Linux (RHEL and similar) environments
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues who are not experts in software and IT
Desired skills and experience
  • Expertise in query composition and optimization
  • Training or experience with data modeling in a relational database setting
  • Experience with scripting and pipelining in a Linux environment, especially ETLs for loading data
  • Familiarity with modern manufacturing processes and process control
  • Interest or education in genetics, biochemistry, bioinformatics, or related fields
