About the Data Practice

The Data Practice drives innovation and sets best practices for responsible use of data across the Whole-of-Government. It works at the intersection of data engineering, AI, privacy, and governance to develop standards, platforms, and tools that enable agencies to build high‑quality data products and unlock public good.

Role Overview

As part of the Data Practice, you will contribute to AI for Data Engineering (AIDE), privacy‑enhancing technologies, and design scalable data solutions for government agencies.

Responsibilities

• Experiment and explore AI possibilities that can supercharge data engineering processes.
• Translate AI advancements into practical capabilities for government.
• Make technology accessible to all agencies and drive impact across government.
• Collaborate closely with agencies to understand privacy challenges, design pilots, gather feedback, and iterate solutions.
• Provide technical consultation and hands‑on support to ensure smooth adoption.
• Identify opportunities for exploratory technologies to address common data challenges and architect scalable solutions.
• Work within cross‑functional teams comprising data engineers, data scientists, software engineers, and product managers.
• Partner with agencies on technical alignment, regulatory frameworks, and governance.
• For senior hires: lead strategic direction, mentor team members, evaluate emerging technologies, and drive projects end‑to‑end.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Data Science, Business Analytics, or a related field.
• 5–8 years of relevant professional experience (intermediate or senior level).
• Core data engineering skillset and deep understanding of system design, data structures, algorithms, data modelling, data access, and storage.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
• Experience architecting data and IT systems.
• Strong SQL skills and experience with analytical data warehouses.
• Strong Python engineering skills.
• Experience working with LLM APIs or AI‑assisted engineering workflows.
• Experience in multi‑disciplinary teams.
• Curiosity, willingness to learn new domains, and ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
• Comfort in a fast‑moving Agile environment.
