Curatorial Research Assistant (Contract – 12 Months)

My client is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Curatorial Research Assistant to support in developing and preparing a major exhibition on art and artefacts from the Mogao Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Dunhuang, China.
Scheduled to open in September 2026, the exhibition will explore how Buddhist art and ideas travelled across Asia, transforming local traditions and inspiring new forms of expression.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct scholarly research using primary and secondary sources (including sources) on art from the Mogao Grottoes and the Dunhuang region.
  • Assist in preparing exhibition texts, bibliographies, captions, images, and footnotes for the exhibition and related publication(s).
  • Support administrative and documentation tasks related to curatorial work, including maintaining object lists, coordinating image copyrights, and managing records.
  • Liaise with internal and external partners such as vendors, designers, institutions, and relevant departments or agencies.
  • Collaborate with the curatorial team to develop engaging narratives, presentations, and exhibition designs.
  • Support the production of multimedia materials (e.g. videos, soundtracks, or digital initiatives) where applicable.
  • Assist in organizing lectures, talks, and educational programs associated with the exhibition.
  • Contribute to the publication process — from conceptualization and research to writing and production.
  • Undertake other duties related to curatorial and exhibition development as assigned.
Requirements
  • Keen interest in art and culture; prior research experience in related areas will be an advantage.
  • Excellent organisational, project management, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Bachelor's degree in Art History, History, Anthropology, Museum/Curatorial Studies, Buddhist Studies, or a related discipline.
Contract Details
  • Duration: 12 months (renewable depending on project requirements and performance)
