The Choir Instructor shall design, lead, and implement a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate choral training programme that nurtures students’ musical abilities, teamwork, discipline, and appreciation for vocal performance. The instructor will guide students in vocal techniques, ensemble singing, stage presentation, and performance etiquette in alignment with the school’s vision, mission, and values.
The scope of work includes:
- Planning and Programme Design Develop a structured, year-long training plan in consultation with the teacher-in-charge. Incorporate progressive skill development in vocal technique, harmony, sight-singing, and performance preparation. Differentiate instruction for students of varying experience and ability levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced).
- Instruction and Training Conduct weekly choir rehearsals focusing on vocal warm‑ups, pitch accuracy, tone production, harmony, dynamics, phrasing, and musical expression. Train students in musical literacy, ear training, and choral blending. Teach appropriate posture, breathing techniques, diction, and articulation.
- Performance and Competition Preparation Prepare students for school‑based performances, public showcases, and competitions such as the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation. Coordinate music selection, interpretation, and rehearsal schedules for performances. Ensure all repertoire and arrangements adhere to copyright and licensing regulations.
- Values and Character Development Inculcate discipline, teamwork, commitment, and respect within the ensemble. Foster confidence, stage presence, and responsibility among student performers and leaders.
- Administrative and Collaborative Duties Work closely with the teacher-in-charge to assess students’ progress and provide regular updates. Assist in auditions, voice trials, and section assignments. Support school events and other assigned duties related to the choir. Submit attendance records, termly reports, and performance reflections as required.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Minimum of Grade 8 ABRSM/Trinity or equivalent in Voice or Piano.
- Diploma or Degree in Music, Vocal Studies, or Choral Conducting preferred.
- Proven experience conducting school choirs or vocal ensembles, preferably with SYF experience.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong understanding of vocal pedagogy and choral techniques.
- Ability to teach sight‑reading, harmonisation, and part‑singing effectively.
- Good communication, classroom management, and motivational skills.
- Experience in working with students aged 9–18 and in managing large group rehearsals.
- Ability to arrange or adapt choral pieces suitable for student voices.
Other Requirements:
- Passionate about developing young singers and fostering appreciation for music.
- Must be punctual, responsible, and able to work collaboratively with school staff.
- Must ensure all teaching content adheres to MOE’s CCA framework and school safety guidelines.
- Willingness to adjust training sessions during examination periods, holidays, or special school events.
