Key Job Purpose

The successful candidate will support the characterisation and evaluation of carbonaceous materials for lithium-ion and next-generation battery applications. The role will involve assisting in materials analysis, electrochemical testing, and data collection to support ongoing research and development activities related to battery materials and electrode performance.

The candidate will work closely with the research team to study the structure, morphology, and electrochemical behaviour of carbon materials such as graphite, hard carbon, and conductive additives used in battery systems

Key Responsibilities

The candidate’s scope of work will include the following:

  • Assist in the characterisation of carbonaceous materials (e.g., graphite, hard carbon, soft carbon, graphene, carbon nanotubes) used in lithium-ion batteries.
  • Support routine material characterisation and analysis using techniques such as:
  • X-ray diffraction (XRD)
  • Raman spectroscopy
  • BET surface area analysis
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
  • Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)
  • Assist with battery electrode preparation and coin cell assembly.
  • Conduct basic electrochemical testing, including:
  • Cyclic voltammetry (CV)
  • Galvanostatic charge–discharge testing
  • Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)
  • Collect, organise, and maintain experimental data and laboratory records.
  • Prepare summaries, technical slides, and reports for internal discussions.
  • Support general laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, and safety procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with team members on battery materials research projects

Job Requirements

  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Science & Engineering. in Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline (e.g., Nanotechnology, Physics, or Electrochemistry).
  • Basic knowledge in the characterisation of carbonaceous materials or battery electrode materials. Hands-on experience will be advantageous.
  • Basic or prior knowledge in solid-state characterisation techniques, particularly Raman spectroscopy, XRD, SEM/TEM, and BET surface analysis.
  • Experience with Li-ion battery fabrication and electrochemical testing (e.g., coin cells, pouch cells, or prototype assemblies) is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with surface functionalisation, defect engineering, and doping strategies for carbon materials is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to support the team and contribute creatively to multidisciplinary R&D projects.
  • Evidence of scientific contribution in relevant research areas is strongly preferred (FYP, URECA).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to support, prepare technical reports and presentations effectively.
  • A collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills and a proactive, willingness to learn mindset.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and meet tight project deadlines.
  • Demonstrated sense of responsibility, attention to detail, and commitment to high-quality work
