Job description
Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the development and execution of communication plans that articulate and amplify SMU's impact from research, educational and student initiatives, entrepreneurial activities, sustainability actions and others.
  • Work with other colleagues in the Office of Impact to secure the evidence base for impact to translate into compelling and communicable formats and ensure that these are shared with other units for their adoption/adaptation/amplification, for example via social media and in publications by other units.
  • Work closely with colleagues from the Office of Corporate Communications and Marketing and across the university to ensure that coordinated and compelling communication about SMU's impact can be shared and delivered across different offices and platforms.
  • Lead the production of key communications assets, including the Asian Management Insights (AMI), that are put directly to market to position SMU as a university that delivers impact.
  • Engage with senior faculty to understand their research and ferret the impact. This involves reading faculty publications, interviewing faculty, translating academic work into digestible and compelling materials, writing stories for AMI and other relevant publications, and putting together materials for broader communication.
  • Given the nature of AMI, the postholder will be required to interact with CEOs, senior public servants and significant university thought-leaders beyond SMU, as the AMI features interviews with such individuals.
  • Oversee the editorial and production processes for AMI and other key communication assets, managing publishers and working within tight timelines driven by the regular and frequent production cycle of AMI.
  • Consider and develop additional communication assets to convey SMU's impact, which could be delivered by the Office of Impact, Office of Corporate Communications and Marketing or other units, as appropriate.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • University degree with at least eight to ten years of relevant work experience in a related capacity. Prior experience in impact or research communication is preferred but not a must.
  • Highly comfortable and confident in engaging and working with C-level executives, senior faculty, senior administrators and external stakeholders; and demonstrated strong understanding of the workings of a complex university system.
  • Strong strategic mindset with proven success in problem-solving, multi-tasking, and analytical abilities.
  • Strong writing and editorial skills with experience in managing tight editorial and production timeline.
  • Demonstrated experience in distilling academic research outcomes and communicating them to non-academic, professional external stakeholders.
  • Notable experience in general administration, project management and delivery, stakeholder engagement and relationship building.
  • Adept at designing and scoping projects, timelines and deliverables.
  • Resourceful, independent worker and a team player, with strong collaborative and influencing skills that enables collaboration with a wide range of partners.
