Job Summary

This position is responsible for underwriting a diverse book of business by employing the methods necessary to meet projected profitability, GWP and expense goals. The role supports the growth of the overall portfolio of business within the appropriate underwriting discipline/guidelines, marketing and servicing of existing and potential clients.

Job Duties
  • Responsible for general underwriting functions including submission reviews, pricing analysis, setting of terms and conditions.
  • Performing extensive account analysis according to underwriting guidelines, including thorough review of underwriting application and submission, research, requested terms and conditions, underlying policy forms and wordings and liaising with other departments to establish full understanding of risk exposures.
  • Performing insurance technical risk analysis including rating models, NATCAT models and policy wording.
  • Taking an active role in the development of business in Asia and Asian interests abroad, exploring opportunities and marketing predominantly out of Singapore and Hong Kong.
  • Proactively identifying and pursuing upselling (add-ons) and cross selling opportunities to maximise profitable revenue potential from new and renewal business and achieve agreed business targets.
  • Liaising with Claims Department on any specific claim activity and overall market claim concerns which could potentially affect profitability.
  • Delegating (and supervising) of work to Underwriting Operations Assistants or Assistant Underwriters as appropriate.
  • Supporting the departmental Regional Head in setting strategic goals, setting budgets and producing regular Management Information.
  • Maintaining underwriting files in an orderly and consistent manner and in accordance with the underwriting guidelines.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Engineering degree (civil or mechanical) with insurance qualifications (ACII, ANZIIF etc) would be an advantage.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in underwriting major construction projects, with expertise and in-depth working knowledge of standard market wordings, endorsements and relevant experience in Asian markets.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with and present to stakeholders and build strong working relationships.
  • Strong marketing and business development capabilities with commercial acumen to influence and negotiate with different stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and proficiency in MS Suite are essential.
  • Self-motivated and well organised; result driven and a good team player.
