Job summary

The Heritage Conservation Centre, part of the National Heritage Board in Singapore, invites applications for an Assistant Conservator (Textiles). Based mainly at 32 Jurong Port Road, you will care for the National Collection’s textiles, support exhibitions, and contribute to preservation strategies.

Under the supervision of the Senior Textile Conservator, you will perform condition assessments, documentation, treatments, and mounting, while maintaining records in the collections management

Qualifications

• Background in Conservation, or a related discipline such as Science, Arts and Humanities, or Textiles or Fashion Design.
• Foundational understanding of art and heritage science, materials deterioration, conservation ethics, and treatment methods and terminology.
• Good manual dexterity and aesthetic sensitivity with familiarity with conservation tools; hand-sewing skills advantageous.
• Strong verbal and written communication, with keen attention to detail and organisation.
• Ability to work respectfully with multicultural materials and contexts.
• Ability to work both collaboratively and independently, managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
• Physical ability to handle collection objects and stand for extended periods.
• Proactive, collaborative approach to work.

Responsibilities

• Carry out conservation work for textiles and garments in the National Collection, including condition assessment, documentation, photography, interventive treatments and textile mountings.
• Assist in planning and coordinating exhibition and gallery revamp preparations, including scheduling and liaison with stakeholders.
• Maintain written, digital and photographic records in the collections management system.
• Support preventive conservation activities such as environmental monitoring, pest management, display mounting, handling and storage improvements.
• Assist with conservation studies or research projects contributing to knowledge building and preparation of reports or publications.
• Participate in outreach initiatives and keep abreast of developments in textile conservation practice.
• Assist with administrative duties or institutional projects as assigned.
