Job Summary:
The Art Works Conservator is responsible for the inspection, conservation, restoration, repair, and preservation of artworks, sculptures, decorative features, murals, and heritage elements. The role ensures that conservation works are carried out carefully using appropriate materials and techniques while maintaining the original appearance, character, and integrity of the artwork.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspect and assess the condition of artworks, sculptures, murals, decorative features, and heritage structures.
Identify deterioration such as cracks, paint peeling, surface staining, corrosion, biological growth, material loss, and other defects.
Carry out cleaning, paint removal, surface preparation, repair, restoration, repainting, and protective treatment works.
Restore damaged or missing decorative and sculptural elements while maintaining the original design, colour, texture, and appearance.
Prepare and apply suitable conservation and restoration materials, including repair mortars, coatings, paints, fillers, and protective treatments.
Perform delicate manual works such as scraping, sanding, brushing, patching, sculpting, colour matching, and detailed painting.
Follow approved Method Statements (MOS), conservation procedures, drawings, specifications, and instructions from conservators, consultants, and project management.
Handle heritage artworks and structures carefully to prevent accidental damage during conservation works.
Assist with condition surveys, defect documentation, photographic records, and progress reporting before, during, and after restoration.
Maintain proper housekeeping and ensure conservation materials, chemicals, tools, and equipment are correctly stored and handled.
Comply with workplace safety requirements, including the proper use of PPE when handling chemicals, paints, solvents, and restoration materials.
Coordinate with supervisors, consultants, conservation specialists, and other trades to ensure works meet project and conservation requirements.
Perform other conservation and restoration duties assigned by the Project Manager or Supervisor.
