Job description

Role Overview

As a Research Engineer in Amity AI Labs (ARAC), you will work at the intersection of cutting‑edge AI research and real business problems across the Amity group.

Your primary mission is to:

  • Build PoC‑grade AI and Generative AI solutions that demonstrate technical feasibility and business impact.
  • Prove that a given business problem is technologically solvable with modern AI/ML.
  • Produce clear blueprints, reference implementations, and technical guidelines that subsidiaries can use to build and operate production systems.

You will not own production systems yourself; instead, you’ll de‑risk technology, validate approaches, and enable product and engineering teams in Amity’s subsidiaries to implement and scale the solutions.

This role is ideal for someone who loves hands‑on experimentation, rapid prototyping, and model development, and enjoys turning ambiguous business problems into concrete technical possibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  1. AI & Generative AI Research Engineering
    • Design and implement PoC‑grade models and systems in areas such as:
      • Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI (text, code, images, multi‑modal).
      • Recommendation systems, personalization, and ranking.
      • User behavior modeling and predictive analytics for engagement and retention.
    • Turn state‑of‑the‑art AI/ML research (especially LLMs and Generative AI) into working PoCs that:
      • Demonstrate that a business problem can be solved with AI.
      • Clarify constraints, data requirements, and expected performance envelopes.
    • Explore and adapt new research (papers, open‑source projects, industry releases) and assess their feasibility and suitability for Amity’s use cases.
    • Document assumptions, limitations, and technical trade‑offs for each PoC to guide downstream implementation teams.
  2. Model Development, Experimentation & Evaluation
    • Build end‑to‑end experimental pipelines:
      • Data preparation, feature engineering, and dataset curation for PoC experiments.
      • Model training / fine‑tuning, including instruction tuning and domain adaptation.
      • Evaluation using appropriate offline metrics and qualitative analysis.
    • Design and implement RAG (Retrieval‑Augmented Generation) prototypes, including:
      • Retrieval pipelines (vector databases, indexes, embeddings).
      • Orchestration logic for combining retrieval with LLMs.
    • Define clear evaluation frameworks for PoCs (metrics, benchmarks, test cases) and produce recommendations for how subsidiaries should evaluate and monitor models in production.
    • Optimize PoCs sufficiently to demonstrate realistic performance and cost characteristics, while leaving full‑scale optimization and production hardening to subsidiary teams.
  3. Collaboration with Subsidiaries (Blueprint & Handover)
    • Work closely with product and engineering teams in Amity’s subsidiaries to:
      • Understand business problems and translate them into AI/ML problem statements.
      • Co‑design solution approaches, including model choices, data requirements, and integration points.
    • For each successful PoC, produce a detailed implementation blueprint, including:
      • High‑level and low‑level architecture diagrams.
      • API/interface designs and data flows.
      • Infrastructure and deployment recommendations (e.g., GPU requirements, scaling patterns).
      • Suggested monitoring and evaluation strategies.
    • Support subsidiaries during handover and early implementation by:
      • Walking them through PoC designs and code.
      • Answering technical questions and advising on trade‑offs.
      • Providing reference code, scripts, and configuration examples.
  4. Ecosystem & Learning
    • Stay current with latest AI/ML and Generative AI developments, especially LLMs, RAG ecosystems, and open‑source tooling.
    • Participate in internal knowledge sharing (e.g., tech talks, demos, documentation) to help raise the AI level across Amity.
    • When relevant, support collaborations with universities and research partners in Singapore (e.g., joint PoCs, student projects, or shared research explorations).
Qualifications
Must‑Have
  • Singaporean/PR candidates are preferred.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of hands‑on experience in AI/ML, applied research engineering, or similar roles.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch (preferred) or TensorFlow.
  • Practical experience with Generative AI and LLMs, including some of:
    • Using and integrating LLMs or multi‑modal models (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, open‑source LLMs).
    • Prompt engineering, function/tool calling, and experimentation with different prompting strategies.
    • Fine‑tuning or adapting models with domain‑specific data.
    • Building RAG‑style prototypes with vector databases (e.g., FAISS, Milvus, Pinecone, pgvector).
  • Solid understanding of core ML concepts and evaluation, including:
    • Train/validation/test splits, overfitting, generalization.
    • Metrics suitable for NLP, recommendation, classification, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Take a loosely‑defined business problem and frame it as a concrete technical experiment.
    • Build and iterate on prototypes quickly while maintaining clarity and reproducibility.
  • Good communication skills, able to explain PoC results, limitations, and trade‑offs to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Nice‑to‑Have
  • Experience with GPU‑based training/inference and familiarity with CUDA.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure) and common data/ML tooling (e.g., MLflow, Weights & Biases, Airflow, Docker).
  • Experience building internal AI tooling, PoC frameworks, or reusable libraries.
  • Background or strong interest in:
    • B2B UCaaS, CCaaS, chatbots, martech, community platforms, or customer engagement.
  • Contributions to open‑source, technical blogs, publications, or participation in AI/ML competitions or communities.
  • Experience working in or with the Singapore / Southeast Asia tech and research ecosystem is a plus.
