Job description

Staff Scientist in bioinformatics for 3D electron microscopy

Temporary position. Department of Chemistry

Project Description

Umeå University is recruiting a staff scientist to work with advanced 3D image analysis of electron microscopy data including tomography, cryo‑EM, SEM generated image volumes, and correlation of image data from multimodal microscopy. As a Staff Scientist, you will be part of a national support team at SciLifeLab Umeå, collaborating with the Umeå Centre for Electron Microscopy (UCEM) and the SciLifeLab Bioinformatics Platform (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden – www.nbis.se). Within NBIS you will contribute to the BioImage Informatics team (https://www.scilifelab.se/units/bioimage-informatics/). The role is funded through NBIS under the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data‑Driven Life Science (DDLS).

Work Tasks

As a staff scientist you will provide researchers with expertise in the planning and analysis of EM and multimodal data across biological, chemical, biochemical and medical research areas. You will lead individual research support projects, contribute to teaching methodology courses at postgraduate level on EM data analysis, and perform national‑level support and service tasks. Your work includes team and user meetings, computational image analysis, presentations, writing protocols and reports, and staying current with EM and image analysis software developments. You will help develop, implement and maintain computational tools and workflows, coordinate facility projects, and collaborate with partner microscopy facilities in Sweden and internationally. Your workplace will be at UCEM in Umeå, and the working language is English.

Qualifications

• PhD in cell and structural biology, bioimaging, biotechnology, data science or an equivalent field. • Experience applying and/or developing advanced image analysis of EM data and correlative microscopy imaging. • Background knowledge of EM data collection (SEM, TEM and/or Cryo‑EM) for life‑science projects. • At least 3 years of experience applying or developing advanced digital image analysis methods in bioimage analysis, including tomographic 3‑D reconstruction and the use of multiple software tools for 3‑D image analysis, segmentation and visualisation. • Excellent communication and cooperation skills in English.

Additional Qualifications

• Relevant post‑doctoral studies or equivalent industry experience (strong merit, not required). • Experience with various microscope types, sample preparation and instrument operations. • Knowledge of reproducible research and FAIR data principles; expertise with code sharing platforms, version control, workflow languages and containerised solutions. • Experience training deep‑learning models on HPC resources. • A well‑established international network in EM and previous international collaborations around research infrastructure.

Application

Your application should contain a personal letter with motivation for applying, a CV, a copy of the relevant diploma and other certificates/grades, and names and contact details of two reference persons.

Applications must be submitted via our e‑recruitment system no later than June 15, 2026.
