Job summary

Betalo is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to take technical ownership of the backend—architecture, infrastructure, and the systems that keep payments moving reliably. We are a small team with real ownership and real decisions, shipping features to fintech customers.

You will lead the technical direction of our backend, design and operate payment services in Go with PostgreSQL, own AWS infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines, and ensure production reliability while complying with regulatory

Qualifications

• 8+ years backend development experience, with senior or lead roles.
• Strong production Go experience and ownership of backend systems.
• Hands-on AWS and Terraform experience, in production environments.
• Experience with fintech, payments, or regulated environments.
• Familiarity with PSD2/AML context is a plus.
• Excellent collaboration with product and engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Own backend architecture decisions and technical roadmap.
• Design, build and operate payment services using Go and PostgreSQL.
• Own cloud infrastructure: AWS, Terraform/IaC, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Ensure production reliability: monitoring, observability, incident response.
• Implement controls for regulated payments: audit logging, access control, data protection.

• Plan sprints with product and prioritize work.
• Manage vendor integrations with banks and payment partners.
• Maintain documentation for FI reporting and audits.

Betalo is a licensed payment institution under the supervision of Finansinspektionen (the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority). We run a payments platform serving both consumers and businesses, and we're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to take technical ownership of our backend — architecture, infrastructure, and the systems that keep payments moving reliably.

About Betalo

Betalo is a Swedish payment institution in active growth and expansion. We build and operate our own payments platform, giving consumers and businesses a fast, reliable way to move money. Our core is invoice payments through cards. We're licensed by and under the supervision of Finansinspektionen, and our engineering team owns the full stack — from infrastructure to product.

The role

You'll lead the technical direction of our backend, working closely with product and the rest of engineering. Day to day that means:

• Making architecture decisions and setting the technical roadmap for the backend
• Designing, building and operating our payment services (Go, PostgreSQL)
• Owning our cloud infrastructure: AWS environment, Terraform/IaC, CI/CD pipelines
• Ensuring production reliability — monitoring, observability, incident response
• Implementing the technical controls required as a regulated payment institution: audit logging, access control, data protection, and supporting AML/KYC-related system requirements
• Driving adoption of AI-assisted development — code assistants, agentic tooling — and evaluating AI use cases in the platform such as internal automation, within regulatory and compliance constraints
• Sprint planning and prioritization together with product
• Vendor and integration work with banks and payment partners
• Keeping systems and processes documented, including for FI reporting and audits

Who we're looking for

We believe that you have 8+ years of backend development experience, preferably including experience in a senior or lead role. Strong production Go experience is required.

Beyond that, you are:

• Hands-on and decisive. You're comfortable making technical calls and taking responsibility for them end to end.
• Pragmatic. You design systems that solve real problems, not just interesting ones. You know when to keep it simple.
• Reliable in production. You've owned systems under real load and know what it takes to keep them running.
• Commercially aware. In a small company, technical choices have direct business consequences.

Required: Hands-on AWS and Terraform experience.

Strong plus: Prior experience in fintech, payments, or another regulated environment. Understanding of PSD2/AML context shortens onboarding significantly.

Plus: Experience using AI coding tools in daily work (Copilot, Claude Code or similar) and integrating LLM APIs into backend services.
