Job description

Postdoctoral fellow in Educational Work with a focus on Aesthetic Subjects

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 41,500 students and about 4,600 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene‑editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Creative Studies at Umeå University's Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers education and research in the aesthetic subjects of Visual Arts, Music, and Sloyd (educational crafts). The department has approximately 45 friendly colleagues who are united in their passion for the aesthetic subjects. This creates a creative environment where people with different creative interests come together, such as wood and textiles, fashion design, visual arts and design, photography, graphic design, sound, music, and music production. For more information, please visit the department's website at: https://www.umu.se/en/department-of-creative-studies/

At the department, research is conducted within Educational Work. The research primarily centers on the aesthetic subjects in schools and teacher education, as well as the municipal culture schools, and collaboration. The research represents several areas, such as professional research, school development, digitalization, academicization, sustainable development, knowledge production of practical knowledge, and values in subject practices. Gender, policy, media ecology, curriculum theory, and subject didactics are some prominent perspectives. The department also conducts research in collaboration with school authorities regarding the development of schools on a research basis and proven experience, an area that has been strengthened by the national initiative ULF (Development, Learning, Research).
