Job description

Overview

Current transmitters are limited in terms of their bandwidth, energy efficiency and linearity. In this research project you will work at the intersection of antenna design, circuit design and signal processing to investigate novel nonlinear multi-antenna transmitters that overcome these limitations. By utilizing antenna mutual coupling for effective amplitude modulation—a shift from the traditional view that considers it detrimental—you will overcome existing limitations in frequency, efficiency, power, and linearity, thereby fostering sustainable digital transformation.

About the Institute

The position is hosted by the Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) department at Chalmers University of Technology, which focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. It collaborates closely with Swedish and international partners across academia, industry and society, and provides access to a 1000 square-meter cleanroom and state-of-the-art microwave measurement facilities.

Project Focus

You will work in a complementary team to investigate a new transmitter topology. Your responsibilities include designing microwave components such as power amplifiers and antenna arrays, and deriving the theory for feeding the individual amplifiers to achieve the most energy-efficient transmission in a specific direction. The goal is to develop a scalable transmitter architecture that uses mutual antenna coupling for load modulation, allowing neighbouring elements to efficiently create modulated signals without relying on classical Chireix outphasing mechanisms.

Responsibilities
  • Independently conduct research and publish results.
  • Co-supervise Ph.D. students and prepare reports for funding agencies.
  • Collaborate with a doctoral student and work on the research question as part of a team.
Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, Applied Physics or equivalent (mandatory).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (mandatory).
  • Experience in wireless communication systems engineering and/or analog circuit design.
  • Experience with microwave circuit design, signal processing, and high-frequency RF and measurement equipment.
  • Experience building RF and microwave systems, and microwave/millimetre-wave integrated circuit design.
  • Experience with Cadence Virtuoso, MWO, Keysight ADS, SPICE and MATLAB.
  • Experience with digital signal processing.
  • Demonstrated potential in teaching and research.
  • Doctoral degree obtained within the last three years is highly meritorious.
Contract Terms

Temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.

Benefits

As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all standard employee benefits, a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, generous parental leave, subsidised day care, free schools, healthcare, and a dedicated programme for Swedish courses if Swedish is not your native language.

Equality & Inclusion

Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects. We celebrate diversity and consider equality and inclusion as fundamental aspects of all our activities.
