Job summary

Hitachi Energy in Västerås is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to enhance features in user-space applications on real-time Linux systems within intelligent electronic devices for substation automation.

You will work in a scrum team, collaborating across software and hardware disciplines to ensure performance and reliability of mission-critical embedded systems, with on-site work at Västerås office.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Proven embedded software development experience and real-time operating systems, especially Linux with PREEMPT_RT.
• Hands-on Yocto Project experience for building, customizing, maintaining embedded Linux distributions.
• Solid understanding of Ethernet networking, Linux networking architecture, and debugging network drivers/components.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Develop and enhance features for user-space applications running on real-time Linux systems in IEDs for substation automation.
• Collaborate with software and hardware teams to ensure mission-critical embedded systems meet performance and reliability requirements.
• Contribute to Agile/Scrum processes and maintain documentation for code and configurations.
• Design, implement, test, and optimize embedded software for low latency and high reliability.
• Create and maintain automated tests, using virtualization and emulation for testing.

Job description

We are looking for a skilled Embedded Software Engineer with strong Linux expertise to join our software team at Hitachi Energy, Grid Automation Products in Västerås.

Embedded Software Engineer

In this role, you will work on feature enhancement and quality improvements of user-space applications running on real-time Linux systems, in the scope of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) for substation automation.

You will be part of a scrum team and will work closely with other software and hardware teams to ensure our mission-critical embedded systems meet stringent performance and reliability requirements. Our team operates using agile methodologies to foster collaboration, flexibility, and continuous improvement.

As this role involves close collaboration with colleagues across software and hardware development, it is an on-site position based at our Västerås office, requiring regular presence on-site.

How you’ll make an impact

• Yocto Distribution: Build, integrate, and customize embedded Linux distributions using the Yocto Project, ensuring reliable software integration, configuration management, and alignment with product requirements.
• Ethernet Communication: Design, integrate, enhance and fine-tune ethernet communication in embedded systems, including redundancy protocols such as IEC 62439-3 (PRP, HSR) and IEEE 802.1w (RSTP).
• Feature Development: Write, test, and maintain high-quality code for embedded systems. Develop and optimize applications for real-time Linux environments, ensuring low-latency and high-reliability performance.
• Automated Testing: Develop and maintain automated tests to ensure the reliability, correct functionality and performance of user-space applications. Apply virtualization and emulation techniques for testing.
• Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers, system architects, cyber security experts and QA teams, to deliver optimized solutions.
• Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for code, optimization techniques, and system configurations.

Your background

• Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Proven experience in embedded software development and real-time operating systems, particularly Linux with PREEMPT_RT enabled.
• Hands-on experience with the Yocto Project for building, customizing, and maintaining embedded Linux distributions.
• Strong understanding of Ethernet communication, Linux networking architecture, and the implementation and debugging of network drivers, interfaces, and protocol stack components.
• Passion for software development, excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
