The continuous miniaturisation of silicon‑based electronics has driven technological progress for decades, but as devices approach atomic scales fundamental laws of physics increasingly hinder further advances. To sustain the pace of innovation, both academia and industry are exploring alternative materials, devices and circuit architectures, particularly in the rapidly expanding field of AI accelerator hardware. Atomically thin two‑dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors have emerged as highly promising candidates to complement or replace silicon in future electronics.
In this project, your doctoral research will focus on developing novel memory transistors based on TMDs that enable functionality beyond the limits of silicon. The project covers nanofabrication, semiconductor device physics, electrical and materials characterisation, as well as low‑level system integration, benefiting from one of the largest cleanrooms in European academia and a uniquely well‑equipped electrical characterisation laboratory.
