Job description

Doctoral student in Radiofrequency ranging for Lunar orbits
School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering

Project title: Characterisation of Esail propulsion in the Lunar orbit

The position is part of the MSCA “E-Sailors” doctoral network (https://sisu.ut.ee/esailors/ ), a challenge-driven Doctoral Network aimed at advancing a novel space propulsion technology known as the Electric Solar Wind Sail (E-sail).E-sail uses hair-thin tethers deployed from a spinning spacecraft and charged to high voltage, which interact with the solar wind flow, propelling the spacecraft with a continuous propulsion force. The project aims at investigating multidisciplinary aspects for designing and operating E-sail demonstrator in Lunar orbit.

In this project, the student will work with establishing a framework for characterizing the thrust of the E-sail demonstrator in an orbit around the Moon. Radiofrequency (RF) ranging will be used for determining the orbital changes achieved by E-sail propulsion. The focus of the project will be on modeling the accuracy of the determining the continuous small thrust force, and optimizing the configuration of the RF ranging operations.

Scientists and doctoral students at of Space and Plasma Physics are involved in a range of space missions, from sounding rockets to large international space projects (including the JUICEmission to Jupiter), where we have built instruments, plan operations, and analyze data.

Supervision: Mykola Ivchenkois proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • Mobility rules- Candidates must not have resided or conducted their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately preceding the recruitment date,
  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge.

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
