Karlstad University (Karlstads universitet) is committed to fostering knowledge and sustainable development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is accepting applications for a doctoral studentship leading to a PhD in Media and Communication Studies at the Department of Geography, Media and Communication. The department offers undergraduate and master’s programmes in Public Relations, Visual Communication and Design, and Digital Media and Analysis. It hosts research centres such as the Centre for Geomedia Studies and NODE, focusing on journalism and media studies.
The doctoral studentship is a paid position combining studies and work. Doctoral students are expected to work independently and contribute to the development of the discipline and the department. Teaching and administrative duties may also be included but will constitute no more than 20% of full time.
As a doctoral student, you will primarily dedicate time to your own studies. The doctoral programme comprises 240 credits for a Degree Doctor and 120 credits for a Degree Licentiate. You are expected to work independently and be prepared to contribute to the activities of the discipline and the department. Teaching and administrative duties may also be included upon agreement, but will not constitute more than 20% of full time. Work as a doctoral student allows for great freedom and flexibility in terms of how you organise your tasks. To contribute to a positive work environment you are expected to be present and active in day‑to‑day operations and the workplace community.
Applicants must meet the general and specific entry requirements (Higher Education Ordinance, Chap. 7, Sect. 35). General entry requires a second‑cycle qualification or equivalent. Specific entry requires completion of courses comprising at least 90 credits in Media and Communication Studies or equivalent knowledge. Applicants must also demonstrate ability to benefit from the programme and admission is based on individual assessment.
Special weight will be given to previous study results, particularly at the master’s level, and the quality and originality of the proposed thesis project. Considerable weight will be given to alignment of the proposed research with the theme “The social consequences of digitalisation” and the department’s research environment. Weight will also be given to English proficiency, published research papers, and presence in the research environment. A good command of Swedish is considered a valuable qualification.
Upon admission, the person will be offered a doctoral student appointment. The position comprises four years of full‑time study consisting of research only. Teaching or other duties may extend the appointment, up to a maximum of five years. The position is fixed‑term, one year initially, followed by possible extensions of a maximum of two years at a time. Salary follows the standard doctoral student level and progresses according to a local collective agreement.
