Job description

Doctoral position

The Artistic Faculty consists of the departments HDK-Valand - Academy of Art and Design and Academy of Music and Drama. As a combined faculty of art and learning, it is an independent, visionary and critical force in creating a more sustainable and open society.

Duties

Doctoral studies comprise four years of full‑time study, leading to a doctoral degree. As part of the employment you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full‑time employment, distributed throughout the study period, which can extend the studies. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first‑ and second‑cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.

Within the first three calendar years after commencement you will be required to participate in up to two months of mobility and exchange with one or more of HDK-Valand's partners, while continuing your doctoral research.

The position is an employment; you are required to be at the workplace during normal working hours unless otherwise agreed or due to illness.

Eligibility

To be considered you must meet the general entry requirements for doctoral education and the specific entry requirements for Artistic Practice.

  1. Achieved a second‑level qualification.
  2. Completed at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are at second‑cycle level.
  3. Acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad.
  • Documented specialization of study oriented toward relevant issues in Artistic Practice.
  • Independent project (thesis) comprising at least 30 higher education credits, or equivalent.
  • Documented ability to work with artistic practice at a high level.
  • Genuine artistic experience in research.
  • Documented interest in reflection, research‑related issues and processes.
  • Documented experience in academic writing or equivalent, demonstrating research‑like stringency.

Applicants who have acquired equivalent knowledge elsewhere also meet the specific requirements.

Assessment criteria
  • Demonstrate a track record of accomplishment and artistic innovation in your specific field(s) through documented practice.
  • Provide a clear research project proposal that:
    • identifies and contextualises a clear research task
    • includes relevant practical and theoretical research methods
    • includes a timetable of planned actions and milestones
    • shows the potential to contribute to the relevant subject
    • indicates how the project relates to the existing research expertise and thematics of the academy
  • Demonstrate ability to think critically and explain the importance of the proposed research project.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of a doctoral researcher and of the nature of a PhD employment position.
  • Show the potential to contribute to the wider research environment and the educational mission of the academy in the future.
Admission and employment

Upon admission you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg. Initial employment may apply for a maximum of one year and may be renewed in extensions of up to two years. A doctoral student may be employed for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of full‑time doctoral study for four years.

Start date: 18 January 2027.

The local agreement on salaries for doctoral students applies. The current monthly salary before tax is SEK 32 300.

Doctoral studies at HDK-Valand require physical presence in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Applicants requiring a residence permit for higher education must present a valid permit no later than the start of studies. Failure to comply may lead to revocation of admission.
