Job description

Doctoral (PhD) Student Position in Chromosome Biology

Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) – Solna campus, Karolinska Institutet.

Overview

The PhD project will explore the cellular mechanisms underlying the three-dimensional structure of chromosomes, focusing on the role of the Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) complexes, especially the Smc5/6 complex. The student will investigate chromosome folding regulation and its impact on chromosome function using techniques such as Micro‑C, ChIP‑seq, and advanced microscopy. The position offers international collaboration with the UTokyo‑KI LINK programme and opportunities for research visits to the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (IQB) at The University of Tokyo.

Responsibilities

• Active participation in all research phases: experimental planning, execution, data analysis, and scientific communication.
• Completion of doctoral courses and attendance at seminars.
• Presentation of research findings at conferences.
• Collaboration within the research group and with international partners.
• Use of state‑of‑the‑art laboratory facilities at CMB and IQB.
