Our client is implementing a data transformation and establishing a new data and analytics platform. We are evaluating Databricks and Power BI and are looking for a senior consultant who can rig the platform for scalable use, set standards and patterns for self-service, and train and onboard users. The role is hands‑on with strategic responsibility and works closely with both Tech and business, as a technical/methodological lead for the analytics group together with our Product Owner.
Together with the Product Owner, you are responsible for the plan and implementation of Databricks and Power BI as a scalable reporting and analysis platform:
- Capture business requirements and translate them into the right solutions.
- Drive change management in the customer's Analytics Community to increase usage and value.
- Lead the analyst team on BI and modeling issues (formally or informally).
- Own and develop the semantic layer over time, with connections to underlying data products – not just the PBI layer.
- Establish the platform's basic set-up: workspaces, deployment pipelines, security and authorization model.
- Define and anchor standards for data modeling, DAX, naming, visual design, certified datasets, and reusable components.
- Contribute to the control model for key figures and dimensions as well as to the self-service model.
- Coach report builders, analysts and users at different maturity levels.
- Develop training materials, templates and documentation, and ensure knowledge transfer so we can stand on our own two feet after the assignment.
We are not looking for: a pure platform architect without an interest in coaching, a developer who wants to build the reports for us, or a strategy consultant without hands‑on Power BI knowledge.
Requirements
- Senior level in Databricks and Power BI, including best practices for self-service setup and implementation
- Extensive experience in data modeling according to Kimball/star schema in tabular model.
- Extensive DAX experience (measures, time intelligence, context transitions, optimization).
- Good understanding of Microsoft Fabric and its relationship to Databricks and classic Power BI (not Fabric architect).
- Documented experience in driving BI/data-driven change in medium to large organizations, including well-functioning self-service models.
- Experience coaching technical and non-technical users and meeting resistance constructively ("this is how we did it in Tableau/Excel/Cognos").
- Experience in building communities of practice, brown bags or user forums.
- Concrete examples of standards you have set previously, as well as understanding the balance between governance and adoption – and the ability to formulate framework decisions (“this is how we do it, this is how we don’t do it, this is how exceptions are handled”).
- Can translate technical choices into business language and facilitate workshops with mixed target groups.
Bonus Skills
- Migration from Cognos or Excel/SQL-based reporting to Databricks/Power BI, experience with modern lakehouse architectures (preferably Databricks), Microsoft and Databricks certifications.
