Job Purpose
The Technical Manager – Seed is responsible for overseeing all technical aspects related to seed potatoes, from variety selection and trials to quality control, treatment protocols, and agronomic support. This role plays a key part in ensuring the long-term sustainability and productivity of the potato supply chain by delivering high-performing seed solutions.
Responsibilities
Variety Development & Evaluation
- Plan and execute seed variety trials in collaboration with local and international breeders.
- Analyze trial results and recommend suitable varieties based on yield, quality, disease resistance, and adaptability.
- Build technical dossiers for selected varieties and support their registration if required.
Seed Sourcing & Quality Control
- Define technical specifications for seed procurement.
- Collaborate with procurement and suppliers to ensure seed quality and phytosanitary compliance.
- Conduct inspections and quality checks at source and upon delivery.
Agronomic Support & Technical Services
- Provide agronomic support to farmers and contract growers regarding seed handling, planting methods, and crop establishment.
- Develop technical guidelines and best practices for seed storage, cutting, and treatment.
Seed Treatment & Handling
- Evaluate and implement seed treatment protocols (e.g., fungicides, sprout inhibitors).
- Monitor the impact of seed treatments on plant health and yield.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills
Academic and professional qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Supply Chain Management or a related field.
Experience
- 7+ years of experience in agricultural storage, preferably in the potato or fresh produce industry.
- Experience working with seed suppliers, trial design, and data analysis.
- In-depth knowledge of potato genetics, variety performance and disease resistance.
Skills
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Full knowledge of the rules of the GMP and HACCP.
- Must have leadership skills and management objectives.
