Job Purpose
The Sustainability Management Lead is responsible for overseeing and driving the sustainability strategies and initiatives for the entire project. This role ensures that sustainability principles are integrated into the project’s design, construction, and operational phases. The Sustainability Management Lead will work closely with the project teams, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure that sustainability goals are achieved while complying with environmental regulations and achieving sustainability certifications.
Key Responsibilities

Sustainability Strategy Development
- Lead the development and implementation of the project’s sustainability strategies, ensuring they align with project goals and client expectations.
- Define and communicate clear sustainability targets and ensure these are incorporated into the project’s timeline and deliverables.

Sustainability Program Management
- Oversee the execution of the Sustainability Management Plan (CSMP), ensuring all sustainability-related tasks are completed on time and within budget.
- Manage sustainability performance monitoring, including the establishment of key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress against targets.
- Ensure that all teams are aligned and motivated to meet sustainability goals.

Collaboration with Stakeholders
- Coordinate with contractors, project teams, consultants, and external stakeholders to ensure the smooth integration of sustainability practices into the project.
- Facilitate collaboration between different teams to ensure that sustainability is considered at every stage of the project.

Sustainability Certification & Compliance
- Oversee the process of obtaining sustainability certifications, such as LEED, BREEAM, WELL, or ISO 20121.
- Ensure compliance with national and international sustainability standards, codes, and regulations.
- Work with the project’s environmental and sustainability consultants to ensure the project meets all relevant environmental certification criteria.

Environmental Impact Monitoring
- Track and report on the project’s environmental impact, including energy consumption, water usage, waste management, and carbon emissions.
- Develop and implement corrective measures to mitigate any negative environmental impacts.

Sustainability Reporting
- Provide regular updates and detailed reports to the project management team, client, and other stakeholders regarding the progress of sustainability initiatives.
- Document sustainability achievements and challenges, and develop action plans to address any identified gaps.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Promote the use of innovative and sustainable technologies, materials, and practices.
- Stay informed about the latest trends and advancements in sustainability, ensuring the project utilizes the most effective and efficient solutions.

Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, mentor, and motivate a dedicated sustainability team, ensuring they are well-equipped to implement sustainability initiatives.
- Facilitate training and development opportunities for team members to improve their sustainability knowledge and skills.

Risk Management
- Identify potential risks related to sustainability and environmental compliance and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
- Proactively address sustainability challenges and ensure that all risks are managed according to the project’s risk management framework.
Required Qualifications

Academic Credentials
- Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability Management, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- A Master’s degree in Sustainability or Environmental Management is a plus.

Professional Experience
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in sustainability management, preferably within large-scale construction or infrastructure projects.
- Experience managing sustainability programs and achieving sustainability certifications (e.g., LEED, BREEAM, WELL, ISO 20121).
- In‑depth knowledge of environmental regulations, sustainability standards, and green building practices.

- ISO 14001 – Certification for Environmental Management Systems.

- Envision – Certification for sustainable infrastructure projects.
Other Relevant Certifications
- Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP) – Certification in sustainability for professionals.
- Energy Management Certification (e.g., ISO 50001) – Certification for energy efficiency practices.
Additional Duties
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and new sustainability technologies.
- Contribute to the development of long‑term sustainability strategies for the company or organization.
- Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and sustainability forums.
