The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring that the workplace environment is safe, secure, and compliant with all relevant health and safety regulations. In a car rental company, this includes managing safety protocols across various locations, such as employee housing, rental branches, warehouses, car maintenance workshops, and the main office. The role involves identifying potential risks, implementing safety measures, conducting regular inspections, and ensuring the overall well‑being of employees, customers, and company assets.

Key Responsibilities
Responsibility for Employee Housing
  • Ensure Safety Standards in Employee Accommodation: Monitor and enforce safety standards within employee housing to ensure they meet legal requirements and company policies. This includes ensuring fire safety measures, electrical safety, and proper ventilation.
  • Risk Assessments & Safety Inspections: Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of employee housing areas to identify hazards such as fire risks, electrical faults, and other potential safety concerns.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Ensure that emergency procedures are communicated to employees living in company‑provided housing. This includes emergency exit plans, fire drills, and the availability of first‑aid supplies.
  • Compliance with Health & Safety Regulations: Keep up‑to‑date with local regulations for employee housing and ensure that the housing facilities comply with legal safety standards.
Responsibility for Rental Branches
  • Conduct Safety Inspections & Audits: Regularly inspect rental branches to ensure they are operating under safe conditions, checking for hazards, proper signage, adequate lighting, and ergonomics.
  • Training & Awareness Programs: Provide training sessions for rental branch employees on safety protocols, accident prevention, and handling emergency situations. Ensure employees are aware of the company’s safety policies and emergency response procedures.
  • Incident Reporting & Investigation: Oversee the reporting and investigation of any accidents, injuries, or near‑miss incidents that occur at rental branches. Ensure that corrective actions are taken to prevent recurrence.
  • Customer Safety: Ensure that vehicles are clean and safe for customers, with particular attention to features such as properly functioning seatbelts, airbags, and emergency kits.
Responsibility for Warehouses
  • Warehouse Safety Protocols: Develop and implement safety measures in the company’s warehouses to minimize risks related to storage, handling, and transportation of vehicles and parts.
  • Regular Safety Inspections: Perform regular safety audits of the warehouse to assess risks such as fire hazards, chemical exposure, and equipment malfunction. Ensure proper storage procedures for fuel, spare parts, and other potentially dangerous materials.
  • Training for Warehouse Staff: Train warehouse personnel on proper lifting techniques, use of machinery, emergency procedures, and correct handling of hazardous materials.
  • Inventory Management Safety: Ensure that safety protocols are followed in managing inventory, particularly for items that may pose safety risks (e.g., flammable materials, heavy equipment).
Responsibility for Car Maintenance Workshops
  • Workshop Safety Protocols: Ensure that safety measures are strictly adhered to in car maintenance workshops. This includes proper handling of tools, machinery, and chemicals, as well as ensuring that workers have access to appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Safety Equipment and Maintenance: Ensure that fire extinguishers, first‑aid kits, safety signage, and emergency exits are accessible and in good working condition within the workshops.
  • Hazardous Material Management: Oversee the safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials used in car maintenance, such as oils, solvents, and other chemicals, in compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Training and Certifications: Ensure workshop employees are trained on safety practices, including how to use machinery, identify potential risks, and react in emergency situations. Monitor ongoing training needs and certifications.
Responsibility for Main Offices
  • Office Environment Safety: Ensure that the main office maintains a safe working environment for employees. Conduct regular inspections to check for hazards such as fire risks, electrical issues, and ergonomic concerns.
  • Emergency Procedures & Drills: Implement and regularly review emergency procedures for the office, including evacuation plans, first‑aid, and fire drills. Ensure that all office employees are trained in emergency protocols.
  • Workplace Health & Safety Programs: Promote general wellness and health programs within the office environment, including ergonomic assessments, stress management, and mental health resources.
  • Compliance with Legal Requirements: Ensure that the main office complies with all local and national workplace health and safety regulations, and that any required safety documentation is current and accessible.
Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in a safety officer role.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications such as NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), or other industry-specific certifications.
