Job description

Woodston Personnel is seeking an experienced Consultant in Geriatric Medicine to join the team of a leading hospital in Saudi Arabia. The Consultant Geriatrician provides expert, patient-centered care for older adults with complex medical, functional, cognitive, and social needs. This role involves leading multidisciplinary teams, delivering inpatient and outpatient geriatrics services, supporting community-based care, and contributing to service development, teaching, and research.

Duties and Responsbilities
  • Provide specialist assessment and management for older adults with multimorbidity, frailty, polypharmacy issues, functional decline, cognitive impairment, and geriatric syndromes.

  • Lead Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments (CGA) in inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and community settings.

  • Manage acute and chronic medical conditions common in the elderly, including falls, delirium, dementia, stroke, mobility disorders, and end-of-life care needs.

  • Lead ward rounds in geriatric wards, frailty units, acute medical units, orthogeriatric services, or rehabilitation settings as appropriate.

  • Support perioperative medicine for older or high-risk surgical patients, collaborating with surgery and anesthesia teams.

  • Participate in on-call rota for acute or general medical services as required.

  • Coordinate safe discharge planning and continuity of care with community, social care, and rehabilitation services.

  • Lead and supervise multidisciplinary teams including nurses, therapists, social workers, pharmacists, and case managers.

  • Develop and implement clinical pathways and protocols for frailty, falls, dementia, delirium, and complex discharge management.

  • Contribute to strategic planning, quality improvement, and service redesign to enhance care for older adults.

  • Participate in governance, risk management, morbidity and mortality reviews, and departmental committees.

  • Collaborate with community, primary care, and long-term care services to strengthen integrated geriatric care.

  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors, geriatric medicine trainees, students, and allied health professionals.

  • Provide formal and informal teaching on topics related to ageing, geriatrics, and general internal medicine.

  • Contribute to educational programs, curriculum development, and professional development activities.

  • Provide compassionate, person-centered communication with patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, prognosis, advance care planning, and goals of care.

  • Facilitate family meetings, complex decision-making, and discussions around capacity, consent, and safeguarding.

  • Ensure robust documentation and communication across care teams.

  • Participate in or lead clinical research, audits, and academic activities relevant to geriatrics.

  • Support data collection, clinical governance, and evidence-based improvements in elderly care services.

  • Present findings through conferences, publications, or internal forums.

  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in medical records and electronic systems.

  • Attend departmental meetings, multidisciplinary conferences, and clinical governance sessions.

  • Contribute to audit cycles, service evaluations, and policy development.

  • Assist with rota planning and departmental organizational tasks where required.
