Senior Intellectual Property Counsel

Our client, Recochem Inc., is seeking an Intellectual Property Lawyer with patent and trademark expertise and 5 years or more of post-Call experience to provide effective legal and strategic advice and manage the organization’s extensive global IP portfolio.

Job Description :

The Intellectual Property Counsel will be responsible for managing Recochem’s extensive global IP portfolio and providing legal advice on a broad range of complex legal and regulatory matters related to intellectual property, marketing, advertising, and privacy. The successful incumbent will also support the business in compliance efforts, draft, review, and negotiate agreements and contracts related to client-facing materials, and provide legal risk analysis regarding compliance and legal processes. This is a hybrid position, based either at the organization’s head office in Montreal, Quebec, or its regional office in Milton, Ontario.

Responsibilities :

• Support the General Counsel and business units by providing strategic legal and compliance advice, especially concerning the intellectual property (patent, trademark, and copyright) portfolio.
• Manage the organization’s global IP portfolio, overseeing any legal team members and outside counsel across multiple jurisdictions.
• Advise on the protection of intellectual property assets and develop cost-effective strategies to maximize coverage.
• Draft, review, analyze, and advise on transactional and commercial agreements, including license agreements.
• Develop and improve agreement templates.
• Review marketing materials and product labels.
• Stay current on laws related to intellectual property, marketing, advertising, and privacy, and monitor legal trends to provide advice and training.
• Advise on consumer litigation trends, marketing strategies, and product claims.
• Assist in legal and compliance analysis and risk mitigation related to activities involving IP or product claims.
• Respond to legal inquiries from internal clients and advise on appropriate actions.
• Undertake other duties as needed.

Qualifications & Skills :

• JD from a recognized law school and licensed to practice law in Canada or the US.
• At least 5 years of post-qualification experience focusing on IP, advertising, marketing, and regulatory compliance, either in-house or at a law firm.
• Strong client skills, autonomous work ability, adaptability, and capacity to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Effective communication skills across formats and audiences.
• Bilingual in English and French is highly desirable.
• Registration as a Patent and Trademark Agent and industry-related expertise are a plus.
