About the role :

As a Senior Legal Counsel Data Privacy , you will be a subject matter expert providing data privacy advice and support across the Aptean group. Your role involves advising on legislation and practical application to our business operations, requiring versatility and agility to guide stakeholders at various levels.

This position is crucial in ensuring Aptean's compliance with data privacy obligations. You will operate effectively across jurisdictions, identifying risks and escalating issues as needed.

We seek a hands-on professional with strong ethics, energy, and the ability to handle a broad range of subjects diligently. Comfort in a small team, prioritization skills, and resilience under pressure are essential.

Day-to-day responsibilities :

• Lead and advise on privacy initiatives such as data mapping, retention, DPIAs, SCCs, international data transfers, privacy by design, and integration for acquisitions, driving projects to completion.
• Manage data subject rights requests and coordinate their resolution.
• Implement and support privacy frameworks, policies, procedures, and work instructions in collaboration with legal, IT, security, and other teams.
• Analyze and refine existing privacy infrastructure, assist with audits and risk assessments.
• Escalate privacy risks and develop legal solutions.
• Train employees on data privacy compliance, increasing awareness organization-wide.
• Monitor legal updates and adjust programs and training accordingly.
• Serve as the primary contact for staff, legal, and authorities on data privacy matters.
• Assist with data incident remediation and security policy development.
• Advise on privacy aspects of marketing and third-party data sharing.
• Review and update privacy notices and negotiate privacy terms in agreements.
• Collaborate with internal teams to support their objectives and manage privacy initiatives across jurisdictions.
• Liaise with regulatory authorities when necessary.

Requirements :

• Qualified lawyer with in-house experience, preferably in a software / IT company.
• 8-10 years of experience in data privacy initiatives and support.
• Data Privacy certifications such as CIPP / E (required) and CIPP / US (desired).
• Experience drafting privacy agreements, policies, notices, and managing data security incidents.
• Strong knowledge of GDPR and other privacy laws.
• Ability to provide pragmatic legal advice and influence stakeholders.
• Excellent communication and drafting skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
• Positive attitude and solution-oriented mindset.
• Experience in the software industry and working with security teams.
• Knowledge of technical controls, PETs, ISO 27001, NIST CSF, SOC 2, system hardening, and incident response.
• Combination of in-house and law firm experience is preferred.
• Strong work ethic and ability to manage high workload with minimal supervision.
