Job Overview

The Head of Manufacturing Engineering & Process Development leads initiatives to mature medical device products from prototype to market by scaling assembly processes and influencing device design to ensure DFM. This role collaborates closely with NPI Leads and on a global cross-functional level with project stakeholders to define a competitive manufacturing strategy.

Leads the manufacturing engineering team in successful execution and development. The Head of Manufacturing Engineering & Process Development develops the process strategy to transition products from development to mass manufacturing, coordinating, planning, and managing activities related to the production process according to lean six sigma methodology.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the manufacturing engineering team, providing guidance, mentoring, and training for success and growth.
  • Possess broad knowledge and experience in engineering technologies supporting prototype to high-volume manufacturing, including fixture design, material handling, bonding technologies, QC methods, application methods, packaging, etc.
  • Be an expert in advanced assembly technologies such as laser welding, ultrasonic welding, heat staking, sensors, robotics, and vision systems.
  • Resource, delegate, critique, and monitor technical work to meet objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including design engineering, production, and quality assurance to develop and implement new products or processes.
  • Develop and implement manufacturing processes and procedures to optimize efficiency, quality, and safety.
  • Identify risks related to achieving targeted COGS and champion solutions to recover.
  • Manage the implementation of new equipment, technologies, and automation systems to enhance capabilities and efficiency.
  • Ensure alignment of technological and manufacturing strategies between R&D, PD, and Operations.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to source and evaluate new technologies, materials, and equipment for process improvement and cost reduction.
  • Plan and implement measures to address technical gaps, risks, or failures within the organization.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to resolve complex manufacturing issues, troubleshoot problems, and optimize output.
  • Be responsible for final manufacturing documents such as BOM, work instructions, test plans, V&V reports, PFMEAs, engineering change orders, IQ, OQ, PQ, etc.
  • Support EH&S initiatives and promote a safety-first culture.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing sites to plan and support product transfer.
  • Leverage lean methodologies, business acumen, and critical thinking for workflow scaling and process improvement.
  • Champion the company vision and culture.

Candidate Background

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, or equivalent; Master’s preferred.
  • Experience designing, maintaining, scaling, and improving production lines.
  • Experience working within an ISO 13485 regulated environment.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years in industrializing production lines.
  • Strong team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing transfer processes.
  • Ability to manage customer relationships and solve complex problems.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to thrive in a changing environment and lead cross-functional teams.
