Head of Operations, Europe

Munich Re Specialty was established as a standalone division in 2023, consolidating the Munich Re group’s primary specialty units. Building on our strong presence in the UK and the US, our goal is to expand across Europe, starting in Spain, and building on our existing operations in the UK, Ireland, and Germany.

We are seeking a Head of Operations, EU, based in Madrid, to help establish and grow our European specialty business. The ideal candidate will have experience in both Retail and Wholesale insurance, knowledge of Lloyd’s of London UW and operational practices, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a willingness to build a new business presence from scratch.

Responsibilities:

1. Establish the MRRSI Operations team mainly in Madrid, including defining roles, recruiting, onboarding, training, overseeing, controlling, and developing the team of operational professionals.
2. Support MRRSI’s strategic and operational goals by providing market-leading non-regulated services, including:
3. Defining, implementing, and improving service level agreements and standard operating procedures.
4. Providing underwriting delivery services such as data entry, validation, triaging, enriching, and reporting.
5. Managing third-party vendors.
6. Ensuring operational resilience and business continuity.
7. Handling corporate insurance covers.
8. Owning digital products for core applications.
9. Managing business processes.
10. Performing other relevant services and tasks.

Build the European Corporate Service Centre in Madrid, collaborating closely with leadership and other functions. Manage all operations staff across various teams and represent operations at the MRRSI Executive Committee. Drive good conduct to deliver optimal outcomes for customers and policyholders.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Proven ability to build and lead a new team and operations, including defining SLAs and SOPs.
• Extensive experience managing insurance operations, preferably in specialty or commercial insurance.
• Experience working in highly regulated environments.
• Intercultural awareness working with colleagues across Europe.
• Fluent in Business English and Spanish; additional European languages like German or Italian are a plus.
• Can-do attitude with a focus on operational excellence.
• University degree or relevant professional qualification.
