Offer Description

ICFO is currently leading the European Chips JU Pilot Line PIXEurope and the Catalan PhotonChip project, both of which are major initiatives aimed at advancing Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) in Europe. These projects are strengthening ICFO’s strategic positioning across the entire PIC development pipeline—from design and fabrication to packaging, testing, and real-world applications.

We are now seeking an experienced Technical Leader to guide the development and operation of ICFO’s PIC packaging and testing infrastructure. This is a unique opportunity to take on a leadership role in a fast-growing, innovation-driven environment with strong industrial engagement.

Position Overview :

The selected candidate will be offered a 3-year renewable contract. The role is ideal for a motivated scientist or engineer with hands-on expertise and demonstrated leadership in PIC technologies and industry-focused development.

Key Responsibilities :

As Technical Leader in Optoelectronic Packaging , the candidate will :

  • Play a central role in the design, setup, and daily operations of a new PIC packaging and testing facility.
  • Coordinate and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and technicians, fostering collaboration and technical excellence.
  • Lead procurement activities, from defining technical requirements to acceptance and implementation of high-end equipment.

This position is hosted by the Optoelectronics group , led by Prof. Dr. Valerio Pruneri , which focuses on the development of next-generation photonic systems, with strong emphasis on innovation, application-driven research, and technology transfer.

Candidates should hold a university degree in Science or Engineering at the time of appointment. A graduate or doctoral-level background will be considered an asset.

Candidates must demonstrate a solid track record in the following areas :

  • Proven experience in optoelectronic packaging of PICs, with a focus on practical implementation.
  • Strong background in managing R&D&E teams, ideally in multidisciplinary and international environments.
  • Competence in equipment procurement, installation, and commissioning within laboratory or industrial settings.
  • Previous engagement in industry-oriented research, bridging applied science with commercial objectives.
