Marine Cargo is part of a wider matrix Marine team that delivers high-quality Marine insurance protection for both core and bespoke Marine risks. Our coverages extend across the globe to a wide range of clients and industries.

Purpose of the Role

We are seeking an Underwriter to maintain relationships with brokers, clients, and business partners in order to manage a renewal portfolio and help develop new business opportunities.

Marine Cargo clients include importers, exporters, manufacturers, and suppliers. We can include protection for cargoes being transported by vessel, aircraft, and trucks as well as static risks. We specialise in dealing with complex risks and supporting businesses from small specialist companies up to multi-billion-dollar businesses.

The primary responsibility of this role will be to underwrite business in accordance with the business plan and within delegated underwriting authority.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy and Planning
  • Contribute to the development of the annual business plan for the Underwriting division by making appropriate decisions.
  • Contribute new ideas and concepts to support the development and delivery of the business plan.
  • Actively participate in European meetings to share and develop strategy, knowledge, and best practice, whilst seeking cooperation with other departments within the company.
  • Ensure the profitability of the Spanish Cargo Book.
  • Delivery
  • Establish, strengthen, and develop relationships with customers, brokers, business partners, reinsurers, and colleagues to maximize influence and achieve business objectives.
  • Demonstrate understanding and awareness of market dynamics and market cycles to drive and enhance business performance.
  • Continually develop expertise and technical knowledge through appropriate development initiatives.
  • Underwrite insurance risks in accordance with the business plan and personal authority to meet business objectives, including negotiating rates, terms, and conditions for existing and new business.
  • Ensure compliance with the production and issue of documentation in accordance with contract certainty requirements.
  • Contribute and influence in the review and analysis of the portfolio to identify progress towards business objectives.
  • Ensure entries are properly recorded onto relevant systems in a timely manner whilst ensuring accuracy of data with relation to both underwriting and aggregate exposures.
  • Policy, Process, and Procedures
  • Compliance with all applicable internal and external laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidance.
  • Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions, and best practice methodology in order to minimise risk.
  • Adherence to all relevant regulatory requirements forms part of your role, and the demonstration of behaviours as set out in the Conduct Risk Policy, as they relate to your role, is core to LSM's commitment to our Liberty Values, placing customers at the centre of our business and behaving with integrity.

Skills and Experience

  • Good level of Marine Cargo underwriting experience is recommended – or any other technical lines (CAR / Energy).
  • Knowledge of relevant market conditions.
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Use of risk profiling and pricing tools and loss models.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Excel & data analysis skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English.
