Responsibilities

A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation and care of patients with various physical, mental, or emotional conditions. The primary goal of a COTA is to assist individuals in developing, recovering, improving, and maintaining the skills needed for daily living and working. Key responsibilities include:

  • Patient Care Execution: Under the supervision of an occupational therapist, responsible for executing therapeutic plans, teaching patients how to use adaptive equipment, guiding exercises, and engaging patients in activities vital to their recovery.
  • Activity and Program Planning: Contributing to planning and selecting therapeutic activities tailored to individual needs, understanding therapeutic goals, and applying creative approaches to meet objectives.
  • Progress Monitoring: Regularly observing, documenting patient progress, reporting changes to the occupational therapist, and adjusting interventions to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Patient and Family Education: Educating patients and families about therapy processes, adaptive equipment, and home modifications, providing clear instructions to support ongoing recovery and independence.

Qualifications

  • Degree in an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program
  • Current license/certification in the state of practice
