Role Overview

As a Software & Controls Engineer at Traila, you will be at the heart of innovation: designing, implementing, and optimizing control software for our next-generation rail technologies. Working closely with our interdisciplinary R&D team, you'll help ensure that our products meet high standards of performance and safety, contributing to more sustainable and efficient rail transportation solutions.

Tasks

What You’ll Do

  • System Design & Architecture: Define software system structure and component interactions; ensure seamless integration with sensors, actuators, and other hardware.
  • Algorithm Development: Create control logic and data processing algorithms to perform advanced tasks, including fault handling and real-time decision-making.
  • Coding & Implementation: Program in languages such as C++, Python, MATLAB, and structured text (ST) to develop embedded and control applications.
  • Testing & Debugging: Execute unit, integration, and system tests to ensure robust functionality and safety.
  • System Optimization & Maintenance: Continuously monitor, maintain, and improve system performance, reliability, and resource efficiency.

Additional Contributions

  • Integration & Interfaces: Design and implement interfaces with external systems, fieldbuses, and third-party hardware.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Deliver clear documentation including system specs, code comments, test reports, and user manuals.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with rail and safety standards through rigorous validation and structured processes.
  • Field Testing & Support: Contribute to field and trackside testing, ensuring safety and effective system performance in real-world conditions.

Requirements

What You Bring

MSc in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering (or similar)

5+ years of industry experience (rail preferred)

Strong grasp of control theory, DSP, and embedded or PLC-based systems

Practical, hands-on experience with:

-C++, Python, MATLAB

-EtherCAT, CAN/CANopen

-PLCs, DAQ systems

-GIT

Strong team spirit and willingness to take on varied tasks

Fluent in written and spoken English (German is a plus).

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with B&R Automation Studio
  • Some experience in GUI/tool development
  • Comfortable working in agile and cross-functional environments
  • Understanding of IT networks and system connectivity
  • Proactive and curious mindset with a drive to innovate
  • Familiarity with KPI tracking and internal process optimization
