Mechanical Technical Engineer (ATLAS Magnet Project) (EP-ADO-SO-2025-84-LD)

Introduction

Join CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, where physicists and engineers explore the fundamental structure of the universe using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments. Contribute to groundbreaking research by maintaining and operating superconducting magnets, including the ATLAS Central Solenoid and Toroid magnets.

Responsibilities

  1. Ensure the smooth operation of CERN's superconducting magnets, performing maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
  2. Prepare and document maintenance procedures, and improve systems for enhanced magnet durability and reliability.
  3. Plan maintenance activities for scheduled shutdowns and contribute to the design of future magnet projects.
  4. Participate in R&D activities related to superconducting magnet technologies.
  5. Educate and mentor the next generation of scientists and engineers in magnet technology.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  2. Experience in maintenance and operation of superconducting magnets, mechanical design using CAD software, and assembly of mechanical structures.
  3. Familiarity with systems such as cryogenics, coils, power converters, and information management tools like CATIA.
  4. Ability to produce technical drawings and models, deliver high-quality work, and work effectively in teams.
  5. Fluency in spoken and written English; willingness to learn French.

  • Position is a limited-duration contract (5 years), with potential for permanent employment.
  • Work involves radiation areas, night shifts, underground interventions, and stand-by duties.
