AI Expert on Anomaly Detection for Distributed Data Networks (IT-FTI-CDS-2025-53-LD)

  • Contract

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Introduction

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Artificial Intelligence Expert to join our Frontier Technology group in the IT Department. The successful candidate will work on the development of advanced anomaly detection algorithms based on Deep Learning. These algorithms will be crucial for monitoring and optimizing the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) network infrastructure and, more in general, different aspects of computing workloads deployment optimization in WLCG. Additionally, there is an exciting opportunity to apply these techniques to the field of humanitarian operations, thanks to a recent collaboration between CERN and the World Food Program on Artificial Intelligence.

Functions

In the IT Department Frontier Technology group, you will:

  • Develop and deploy anomaly detection algorithms using Deep Learning techniques.
  • Collaborate with network engineers and data scientists to understand the requirements and challenges of the WLCG network infrastructure.
  • Analyze large-scale network data to identify patterns and anomalies.
  • Optimize algorithms for real-time performance and accuracy.
  • Conduct experiments and validate the effectiveness of the developed algorithms.
  • Explore and apply new anomaly detection techniques to humanitarian operations in collaboration with the World Food Program.
  • Document and present findings to stakeholders and contribute to scientific publications.

Stay updated with the latest advancements in AI, Deep Learning, and network monitoring technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in developing and deploying Deep Learning models, particularly for anomaly detection.
  • Solid understanding of CERN network protocols and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of programming techniques and languages: strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with Deep Learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Administration and design of networks.
  • Problem-solving skills: assimilating large quantities of information, identifying key issues and formulating conclusions clearly and concisely.
  • Achieving results with a structured and organized approach towards work; setting priorities and planning tasks with results in mind.
  • Demonstrating accountability by working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises and taking responsibility for own actions and decisions.
  • Working in teams by building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
  • Communicating effectively by delivering presentations in a structured and clear way; adjusting style and content to the audience.

Spoken and written English: ability to understand and speak the language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations. The willingness to acquire French will be an asset.

Eligibility and Closing Date:

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all Member States and Associate Member States.
