The Institute for Infectious Diseases at the University of Bern invites applications for two PhD and two Postdoctoral positions in the field of pneumococcal virulence research, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Positions are available from October 1, 2025. The project, supervised by Prof. Lucy Hathaway and Prof. Markus Hilty, focuses on the identification of novel Streptococcus pneumoniae factors that determine virulence, particularly in the context of vaccines with expanding serotype coverage.
Requirements
– For PhD positions: Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., microbiology, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, infectious diseases)
– For Postdoctoral positions: PhD in a relevant field
– Preferred Experience With Genetic Engineering, Genomics, Or Bioinformatics
– Demonstrated motivation and interest in microbiology
– Proficiency in English (German language skills are an advantage)
– Part-time arrangements (60–80%) can be negotiated for postdoctoral candidates with personal obligations
