The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love.

That’s what makes us Roche.

In Roche’sPharmaceutical Research and Early Development organization (pRED), we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. At pRED, we are united by our mission to transform science into medicines. Together, we create a culture defined by curiosity, responsibility and humility, where our talented people are empowered and inspired to bring forward extraordinary life-changing innovation at speed.

This position is located in preclinical Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (pCMC), a department within the Small Molecule Research organization in pRED Therapeutic Modalities (TMo). We pave the path to bring drug candidates from early research into development in a diverse, ambitious, innovative and collaborative environment. We are CMC experts and build our strength on a broad diversity of technical expertise in chemistry, formulation design, material science and analytical chemistry, delivering and innovating in the space of small molecules, peptides and nucleic acid-based medicines.

The opportunity

We are offering a unique opportunity to join our team in the Roche Innovation Center Basel as Senior/Principal Associate in the Preformulation and drug delivery team dedicated to assess the developability of drug candidates and to develop preclinical formulations to advance our portfolio by successfully transforming viable molecules into medicines.

  • As a (pre-)formulation associate, you work in a team with the preformulation project leader to plan and execute lab experiments for physico-chemical characterization of drug molecules, assessing their potential as medicines. You develop formulation concepts for pre-clinical studies across various administration routes and perform formulation supplies and their analytical assessments independently.

  • You use state of the art digital laboratory tools like electronic laboratory notebook and centralized data storage and contribute to the advancement and implementation of innovative digital solutions and automation workflows to enhance our operational efficiency and effectiveness.

  • You investigate, evaluate and implement innovative drug delivery and targeting technologies to meet the target product profile of new drug candidates, possibly representing the work in a broader community.

  • As a lab owner you are responsible for keeping the respective equipment operational, you organize maintenance services and follow all Roche guidelines and principles regarding Safety, Health and Environment.

  • As Senior/Principal Associate you train, support and supervise interns or apprentices in alignment with the responsible scientist.

Who you are?

  • A successful apprenticeship, bachelor or master degree in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Technology, Biopharmaceutics or similar field with a demonstrated experience in Pharmaceutical Industry (at least: Apprentice + 5 years working experience, BSc + 4 years working experience, MSc + 3 years working experience), mostly preferred in the formulation R&D space.

  • You bring a proven track record in early-stage formulation development for studies across therapeutic areas and ideally expertise in physicochemical characterization of new chemical entities (e.g. beyond classical small molecules).

  • Your knowledge of the drug development process, combined with your expertise in designing, developing, and analyzing (preclinical) formulations using key scientific methods, are key to be successful in this role.

  • You want to conduct both wet lab and in-silico biopharmaceutical investigations for preclinical formulations and bring a strong understanding of biopharmaceutics

  • You demonstrated an ability to operate in self-organized teams with a flat hierarchy, you plan and execute tasks independently, join initiatives proactively, and collaborate inclusively across departments and global functions. You have good communication and excellent organizational skills.
