Job Description

Join the forefront of particle accelerator innovation! By developing and applying an advanced optimization environment, you will participate in designing the next generation energy systems for the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee and FCC-hh) at CERN.

As an Electrical Engineer, you will join the Fast Pulsed Converters (FPC) Section of the Electrical Power Converters (EPC) Group within the Accelerator Systems (SY) Department. You will also collaborate with professionals from other departments and sections.

You will contribute to building an optimization tool that integrates multi-domain models, including power converters, civil engineering, cooling & ventilation, magnets, and Radio Frequency (RF) systems. The goal is to explore and define the most efficient and sustainable powering configurations for CERN's complex infrastructure.

Your work will help minimize capital investment (CAPEX) and operational costs (OPEX), supporting CERN's sustainability goals for future energy management. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of engineering, system modeling, and environmental responsibility — shaping the energy systems of tomorrow's largest particle accelerator.

Your main tasks:

  1. Contribute to the development of the optimization tool
    • Define the optimization framework
    • Integrate existing accelerator equipment models in Python
  2. Define optimization scenarios for powering the FCC
  3. Present your findings at workshops and conferences

Your profile

Skills

  • Experience with Python
  • Experience in analytical modeling of physical systems (electricity, mechanical, or other domains)
  • Knowledge of numerical optimization
  • Knowledge of documentation principles
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written), with a willingness to learn French

Eligibility criteria:

  • Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State
  • By the application deadline, a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Electrical Engineering or Physics (or a related field), with a highest educational qualification of either a Bachelor's or Master's degree
  • Have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract
  • Applicants without a university degree are not eligible
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible

Additional Information

Application deadline: 25th May at 23:59 CET

Contract duration: 24 months, with possible extension up to 36 months

Working hours: 40 hours/week

Target start date: 01 July 2025

Field of work: Electrical or Electronics Engineering

What we offer

  • Monthly stipend between 5196 and 5716 Swiss Francs (net of tax)
