Role Purpose

Starr Insurance Companies has a requirement for an Onshore Energy Underwriter to join our dynamic Zurich-based team and work closely with counterparts across our European network and in the UK within the matrix structure.

The main focus of the role will be to write profitable Onshore Energy business in line with the underwriting plan, using professional judgment to achieve the target premium revenue, expected return on capital, and business growth, whilst operating in accordance with the underwriting manual, general compliance, regulatory standards, and company procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement the Starr Companies underwriting strategy, portfolio, and customer/channel propositions that optimize local and regional business opportunities while considering Starr Companies’ strategy and risk appetite.
  • Support the underwriting community by underwriting this market segment and helping execute their business strategy.
  • Authorize and/or make recommendations regarding Onshore Energy and risk exposures, recognizing local risk appetites and integrating these into final underwriting decisions.
  • Monitor the marketplace to identify, assess, and make recommendations regarding underwriting opportunities and threats presented by new and emerging risks.
  • Identify and develop opportunities for cross-company cooperation and synergies within the wider Starr Companies group offerings.
  • Deliver effective oversight and underwriting risks in line with the agreed policy and risk appetite, reporting and making recommendations to management.
  • Develop broker and client relationships to optimize opportunities to lead business, including arranging or attending regular meetings, presentations, and events.
  • Knowledge of and interpretation abilities related to risk engineering are optional but preferred.

To be successful in this role, you will need significant underwriting experience within the Onshore Energy sector in the European market, including the risk engineering segment. You should have advanced knowledge of this specific class of business, be familiar with market wordings, trends, insurance practices, and reinsurance practices. Proven relationship-building, communication, influencing, and negotiation skills are essential. Strong language skills in French and/or German, in addition to English, will be crucial for performance in this role.
