Job overview
The Countdown Company is offering an open position for a senior mechanical engineer capable of taking on a wide spectrum of challenges spanning over multiple industries. The candidate will be given the responsibility of leading several projects technically. Experience will be key to ensuring timely delivery of high-quality solutions within project budgets. Projects’ scope varies from optimizing existing machinery to developing new special machines, requiring teams from one to three engineers.
Working environment
The Countdown Company is a mechanical engineering office developing tailored mechanical systems for the aerospace, watchmaking, and food industries. We promote proximity between the different fields of mechanical engineering, offering a unique opportunity to perform hands-on work in a non-corporate and pluridisciplinary environment. We also encourage employees to explore all phases of a project’s development process. The Company’s facilities are located in Orbe, Switzerland. With a workshop on the ground floor and an office on the first floor, all tools required for product development are vertically integrated.
Responsibilities
Firstly, the candidate will have the role of lead engineer on several projects:
- Identify and mitigate technical risks and proactively resolve technical issues and conflicts.
- Define specifications and architecture for mechanical systems and sub-systems.
- Perform tradeoffs and take critical technical decisions.
- Ensure compliance with specifications and quality standards.
- Lead design reviews, project meetings, and cross-functional discussions.
- Lead all engineering phases of system development: specification, design, analysis, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and commissioning.
- Lead all mechanical engineering fields in system development: structure, drive, pneumatics, hydraulics, automation, and safety.
- Validate designs and dimensioning of mechanical structures and elements.
- Mentor and coach team members, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
- Negotiate with suppliers.
- Support sales team to determine potential project feasibility and provide costs breakdown.
Secondly, as a mechanical engineer:
- Use CAD software to review detailed designs, drawings, and complex assemblies.
- Conduct feasibility studies and analysis to evaluate design concepts, ensuring compliance with technical specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Derisk, conceptualize and plan manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing activities. Troubleshoot issues and implement solutions to resolve challenges.
- Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in mechanical design and manufacturing.
Thirdly, if the candidate is interested in project management responsibilities (optional):
- Manage engineering projects from initiation to completion, ensuring compliance with project timelines, budget, and quality.
- Define project scope, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Develop detailed project plans, schedules, resource allocation plans, and manage invoicing.
- Monitor project progress and provide regular updates to stakeholders, including project status reports and presentations.
- Estimate, track and negotiate contract changes.
- Ensure clear communication within the team and with the client.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field; Master's degree preferred.
- 8+ years of professional engineering experience in mechanisms or industrial machine development.
- Proficiency in French and English, German is a plus.
Preferred skills and experience
- Experience with SolidWorks (incl. PDM).
- Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural analysis.
- Strong understanding of mechanical principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience in a workshop environment.
- Experience with prototyping, testing, and validation of mechanical components and systems.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with a focus on delivering high-quality solutions.
- Knowledge of Swiss suppliers for mechanical parts and services.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with product development processes, from concept to production.
- Experience with at least one industry standard (i.e. CE, FDA, IEC, ECSS, ...).
- Participate in several projects in parallel (3+) and lead engineering teams (5+ members).
- Driving license (cat. B) recommended.
