The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) is a National Research Infrastructure jointly founded by EPFL and ETH Zurich, part of the ETH Domain. Its mandate is to support academic labs, hospitals, industry, and public sector stakeholders, including cantonal and federal administrations, throughout their entire data science journey—from data collection and management to machine learning, AI, and industrialization. With a multidisciplinary team across Lausanne, Zurich, and Villigen, SDSC offers expertise and services in health and biomedical sciences, energy and sustainability, climate and environment, and large-scale scientific infrastructures.

For SDSC's Research team, we are currently seeking a Senior Data Scientist. This team manages research collaborations within academia and the public sector.

Job description

As a Senior Data Scientist at SDSC, you will leverage your expertise in machine learning, statistical data science, computer vision, natural language processing, and signal processing. You will collaborate closely with researchers, experts, and partners from academia and the public sector across various fields such as health, biomedical sciences, climate, environment, energy, sustainability, physical and engineering sciences, and digital society. Your role involves analyzing or modeling data to answer specific scientific questions or developing algorithms for challenging tasks.

This includes engaging with collaborators to understand project needs, translating them into data science problems, selecting appropriate methods, implementing algorithms, evaluating results with domain experts, and documenting and releasing open-source code. Additionally, you will contribute to research papers, technical reports, and communicate findings effectively.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Leading data science projects with academic and public sector partners.

You will also contribute by:

  • Advising MSc students.
  • Evaluating project proposals.

Profile

The ideal candidate:

  • Holds a PhD in machine learning, statistics, computer vision, natural language processing, signal processing, or optimization.
  • Has practical experience applying machine learning models to real-world problems.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and applications is desirable.
  • Proficient in Python, PyTorch, and familiar with current models and architectures.
