Job description

The post will be held by an experienced and skilled mechanical technician and supervisor who will undertake a range of detailed maintenance activities on the Typhoon aircraft or its components.

The post holder requires an excellent understanding of approved technical data, and is competent to supervise personnel carrying out maintenance instructions in accordance with the organisation’s regulatory framework. The post holder demonstrates a distinct ability to analyze and diagnose faults in aircraft systems, equipment and assemblies, follows diagnostic procedures and works effectively within a team, providing guidance to less experienced team members in a diverse and dynamic operational environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake detailed maintenance, inspection and supervision activities on the Typhoon and its components.
  • Assure that work carried out has been completed in accordance with the work package using relevant approved technical information.
  • Resolve faults and maintenance issues, including configuration management.
  • Conduct maintenance and diagnostic activities on the Typhoon aircraft or components, which may include aircraft ground handling, flight servicing, aircraft role changes, component removals, inspections, repairs, modifications, fault rectifications, replacements and/or functional/system tests.
  • Demonstrate a flexible and proactive attitude to carrying out responsibilities appropriate to the role and take direction appropriately.
  • Maintain personal task authorisations for working on aircraft or components.
  • Ensure that maintenance is undertaken on schedule and resolve any issues, escalating as required.
  • Undertake fault evaluation and raise ad hoc work cards for found faults during maintenance.
  • Supervise the team to ensure that maintenance is undertaken on schedule and highlight any issues, escalating as required; report on any impact to the wider programme.
  • Ensure that staff are sufficiently competent and approved for the maintenance tasks allocated to them.
  • Perform support tasks within the aircraft or component maintenance facility that are required to maintain compliance with the MOE.
  • Implement Functionally Mandated Procedures (FMPs) such as oversight checks, control of tooling/test equipment, etc.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to the team, develop team members using formal assessment processes (e.g. PDRs), support and sponsor training requests including on‑the‑job training.
  • Communicate complex information clearly and demonstrate sound people‑management skills.
  • Scope and carry out independent inspections.
  • Maintain a personal log book to demonstrate currency and recency, sign other personnel’s log books as appropriate, undertake authorisation and task competency approvals and check Pt 145 licence application packs prior to submission.
Requirements
  • Completion of Typhoon Q‑Course is essential.
  • Completion of an Engineering Apprenticeship, ideally in Aeronautical Engineering or equivalent military apprenticeship / qualifications.
  • Academic qualification minimum of City & Guilds 2675 or 2661 in Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance or equivalent.
  • Aircraft platform training (On a/c requirement).
  • Broad and in‑depth product knowledge/competency within own technical/subject area.
  • Awareness of how the team integrates with others to achieve overall objectives, demonstrating an understanding of continuous improvement and its application.
  • Experienced and competent leader at this level, with a minimum of 2 years working at Technician level prior to undertaking a Supervisor role.
  • Demonstrating breadth of experience, currency and recency via a log book capturing skills, knowledge and authorities for working on aircraft type or in bays; practical experience and expertise in application of aviation safety standards and safe operating practices.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of Expositions and Functionally Mandated Procedures Management training, PDR training / experience.
