Job description
Overview

Involved in both the reactive and pro‑active care of athletes and non‑athletes through the hospital’s Outpatient Clinic, Screening Department, and involvement with the National Sports Medicine Program (NSMP). In addition, assisting the overall development of Sports Medicine services in the State of Qatar.

Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive diagnoses and treatment of sports or activity related injury or illness.
  • Provide athletes with education and counselling related to their injury or illness. Implement mental strategies that enable athletes to cope with and overcome setbacks.
  • Order and interpret results of diagnostic imaging and laboratory procedures.
  • Educate athletes about doping control when prescribing medications. Provide nutritional guidance to assist with the rehabilitation process.
  • Coordinate sports care activates with other medical experts. Supervise the entire rehabilitation process.
  • Develop and prescribe exercise programs to condition rehabilitated athletes.
  • Facilitate and advise on return‑to‑play decisions after injury or illness.
  • Record all medical care information and maintain medical records. Evaluate athletes prior to sports participation to determine
  • Coordinate sports care activates with other medical experts. Supervise the entire rehabilitation process.
  • Evaluate athletes prior to sports participation to determine predisposition to injury. Inform and counsel coaches and trainers on the medical condition of athletes.
  • Provide player medical care at sports events, when required.
  • Develop and implement procedures for dealing with emergency injury situations. Conduct research into prevention and treatment of injuries or medical conditions.
  • Participate in the Sports Medicine Department’s research program. Participate in the Sports Medicine Department’s clinical education program.
  • Participate in professional development programs including conferences, presentations, workshops and seminars.
  • Participate in development of new clinical interest areas and services.
  • Teaching and mentoring clinical fellows in sports medicine, residents, interns and students.
  • Provide guidance and direct input into the development plans and performance management of direct reports to meet the organizational mission and objectives.
  • Assume or accept any other responsibilities as assigned by the direct supervisor within the position role and responsibility.
Qualifications

Minimum experience of 12-15 years in which minimum of 5 years of clinical Sports Medicine experience., preferably in a similar Industry. Highly skilled in diagnosis and management of acute and gradual onset sports injuries. Highly skilled in pre‑competition assessment of athletes and ability to assess readiness to participate in competitive sport. Skilled in diagnosing, investigating and management of sport‑related medical conditions, including, but not limited to infections, respiratory, gastro‑intestinal and cardiac conditions. Expertise in the management of elite, professional and recreational athletes in the athletic context.

Education & Licensing

A recognized basic medical qualification (such as an MBBS or equivalent) is required. Formal specialization in Sports Medicine is expected, and candidates holding accredited postgraduate training in this field will be given priority consideration.

International Training Evaluation

In cases where applicants originate from countries in which a recognized specialty in Sports Medicine is not formally established, their professional training, postgraduate qualifications, and clinical experience will undergo a comprehensive individual evaluation to determine the extent to which the applicant’s credentials correspond to the competencies typically associated with a certified Sports Medicine specialist. Fulfil all medical licensing requirements as required by the local authority.

Administrative & Professional Requirements

Administrative ability to keep up to date the habitual paperwork (clinical or administrative reports) at the ASCR and Cardiology department. Demonstrates interest and intellectual enthusiasm in the use of the current international Clinical Practice Guidelines. Expert Consensus recommendations and evidence‑based medicine (EBM) recommendations in Sport and Exercise Medicine as guide for his/her clinical practice. Willingness to take accountability and responsibility for personal actions and decisions made. Ability to work shifts and demonstrable willingness to be placed on a 24‑hour callback roster if required.
