Job description

Description

A postdoctoral position is available for a research project led by Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. The project aims to study the dynamic, structural, thermodynamic, transport, electrical and magnetic properties of layered quantum materials. The particular focus will be on metallic and insulating two-dimensional magnets under extreme conditions of low temperature, high magnetic field and especially high pressure. The core project activities will involve the experimental study of these materials using a variety of probing techniques, beginning for some systems with materials synthesis and characterization.

Location and Duration

The appointment is up to 3 years, located in Doha, Qatar, with starting date of August 2025 or later.

Collaborating Institutions

The project is a collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Doha University for Science and Technology (Qatar), the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland), the Hamad bin Khalifa University (Qatar) and the University of Sharjah (UAE).

About CMU in Qatar

CMU in Qatar (CMUQ) operates in concert with several other American and European branch campuses under the umbrella of Qatar Foundation’s Education City ( https://www.qf.org.qa/education/education-city ). The branch campus closely follows the admissions requirements and English language curriculum of the home campus in Pittsburgh, USA which awards all degrees. CMUQ’s faculty is a mix of professionals hired specifically for this campus and seconded by faculty from the main campus. CMUQ’s primary focus is undergraduate education in Business Administration, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, and Information Systems.

Qualifications
  • PhD in relevant field
  • Strong previous experience in high-pressure techniques
  • Highly independent and able to drive the research project with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of several transport, magnetic, thermodynamic and structural measurement techniques
  • Experience in neutron scattering, synchrotron x-ray studies or ARPES is an advantage
Application Instructions

Interested candidates should send their application materials including CV, publication list, recommendation letters and a 1-page description of previous research including details of the materials studied and techniques used.
