About the Sharc team

Engineering at hx drives every breakthrough that transforms how insurers make billion-dollar decisions. At the foundation of this sits our Shared Architecture team (Sharc 🦈) - the engineers who build the essential systems that power our entire engineering organisation. From SSO and identity management to API gateways and event-driven data platforms, this team creates the technical backbone that enables every product team to build fast, integrate seamlessly, and scale with confidence.

As a Backend Engineer in Sharc, you'll architect and build the core platform components that every engineer at hx depends on. This isn't backend work that sits in isolation - the systems you create will be used across the entire engineering organisation, and the quality of your work will ripple through every product we ship.

You'll tackle deep technical challenges around scalability, security, and developer experience, working in Rust and Kotlin to build infrastructure that balances flexibility with standardisation. What you'll be doing

• Design and deliver core platform services in Rust and Kotlin that power critical infrastructure like SSO, API gateways, webhook platforms, and data mesh systems used across the entire engineering organisation.
• Drive reliability and security improvements for internal APIs and shared services, implementing observability, access controls, and authentication systems that meet enterprise security standards.
• Enable product teams to ship faster by building shared tooling and infrastructure components that eliminate common bottlenecks and provide seamless integration paths.
• Shape technical architecture through design discussions and architectural decisions that balance developer experience with system scalability and maintainability.
• Build developer-first solutions that are actually delightful to use, focusing on clear documentation, intuitive APIs, and automation that reduces friction for engineering teams.
• Collaborate across teams to understand infrastructure needs, gather requirements, and ensure your solutions solve real problems while maintaining high technical standards.

What you'll need to have done

• Built production backend systems with solid experience in platform or infrastructure teams, ideally in environments where your work supported multiple development teams.
• Delivered robust systems using modern languages with proficiency in Rust, Kotlin, or similar technologies (Golang), plus the willingness and ability to learn new languages quickly.
• Implemented secure, scalable infrastructure using AWS and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform, with hands‑on experience building systems that handle authentication, authorisation, and API management.
• Designed APIs and system integration patterns with a strong grasp of secure system design, ideally including experience with identity systems like OAuth2, OIDC, or SSO implementations.
• Collaborated effectively with technical teams to gather requirements, communicate complex ideas clearly, and build solutions that teams actually adopt and rely on.
• Demonstrated commitment to quality through clean, testable, well‑documented code and a track record of building systems that maintain high uptime and performance under load.

• You prefer working on isolated features rather than building shared infrastructure that requires understanding diverse team needs and balancing competing requirements.
• You're more comfortable with established patterns and technologies than learning new languages like Rust and adapting to evolving technical architectures.

Compensation

At hx, we're committed to salary transparency. You'll always have clarity on pay early in the process - our Talent Partner will share details with you during initial conversations - and we're working towards publishing salary information for all roles globally.

Because we're building at the intersection of technology/SaaS and insurance, our roles don't always map neatly onto traditional benchmarks. Our approach is to design compensation that's competitive in the market, fair across teams, and aligned with the impact our people make.
