Job summary

Box is seeking a Software Engineer for the Automate team in Warsaw. You will design and implement full-stack features using Java backend and React/TypeScript frontend to power the workflow automation platform.

You will collaborate with product, design, and infra teams to deliver scalable, high-performance systems. The role requires 3+ years of experience, strong cloud + Docker/Kubernetes skills, and fluent English. Box supports a hybrid work model with in-office days in Warsaw.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional software development experience in full-stack roles.
• Proficient in Java and React/TypeScript, with REST APIs and modern web patterns.
• Experience building scalable backends, databases, caching, and async processing.
• Fluent English (written and spoken).
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure and Docker/Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement full-stack features for Box Automate using Java and React/TypeScript.
• Develop and optimize backend services powering workflow automation for performance and scalability.
• Build responsive UIs in React to create, configure, monitor automated workflows.
• Collaborate with product, design, and infra to define requirements and deliver features on schedule.
• Participate in code reviews, mentor juniors, and shape engineering best practices.
• Join on-call rotation and respond to issues when on-call.
• Attend stand-ups and 1:1s to align and improve.

As a Software Engineer on the Automate team, you will be at the heart of Box's workflow automation platform - a product that empowers millions of users to automate complex business processes without writing code. The Automate team is a growing organization of ~30 engineers across four specialized teams, responsible for building the intelligent automation engine, intuitive user interface, and seamless integrations that enable organizations to transform how they work.

In this role, you will design and develop full-stack solutions that span from backend automation logic to responsive frontend experiences. You'll work with Java and React/TypeScript to build scalable, performant systems that handle millions of workflow executions daily. You'll collaborate with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to innovate on automation capabilities, improve user experience, and integrate with enterprise applications. Your work will directly impact how customers streamline their most critical business processes - from contract lifecycle management to invoice processing to employee onboarding.

What You'll Do

• Design and implement full-stack features for the Box Automate platform, writing clean, maintainable code in Java (backend) and React/TypeScript (frontend)
• Develop and optimize backend services that power workflow automation, ensuring high performance, reliability, and scalability across distributed systems
• Build responsive, intuitive user interfaces in React that enable users to create, configure, and monitor automated workflows
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product, design, and infrastructure to define requirements, propose technical solutions, and deliver features on schedule
• Participate in code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to engineering best practices and architectural decisions
• Participate in our on-call rotation, available at all times while on-call to help respond to and triage any issues that arise
• Attend and engage in weekly stand-ups, team meetings, and manager 1:1s to ensure alignment and continuous improvement

Who You Are

• 3+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated expertise in full-stack development
• Strong proficiency in Java and React/TypeScript; deep understanding of object-oriented design principles, REST APIs, and modern web development patterns
• Experience building scalable backend systems, including database design, caching strategies, and asynchronous processing
• Proven ability to assess, communicate, and complete project milestones with manager and team members in a time-sensitive manner
• Fluent English proficiency (written and verbal)
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)

Preferred Skills

• Experience with workflow automation, business process management, or integration platforms (nice to have, not required)
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and DevOps practices
• Track record of leading cross-functional projects or mentoring junior engineers
• Experience with enterprise integrations and API design
• Contributions to open-source projects or demonstrated passion for software craftsmanship
