Job description
Senior Software Engineer / AI Generalist

Location: Remote (Poland-based) Company: Merit Holdings Reports to: Head of AI & Technology

About Merit

Merit is a holding company that acquires, manages, and builds software businesses in niche verticals over a very long period of time.

We are taking an AI-first approach to modernizing and expanding our portfolio — helping our companies move faster, make great technology choices, and explore new product opportunities.

Our internal technology group supports both our investment operations and our portfolio companies. We’re now growing our engineering team that will operate both internally and as a forward-deployed team across our portfolio — tackling high-impact projects wherever we identify opportunities to deliver value.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer / AI Generalist to join this growing engineering team. You’ll work directly with the Head of AI & Technology, developing internal AI tools and contributing to projects across our portfolio — from automated QA frameworks to AI-assisted product features.

This is a hands-on role suited to a technically strong, adaptable engineer who enjoys variety and is comfortable working across stacks and products.

We’re tech-agnostic — we choose tools based on business value, not ideology.
Why Join Us
  • Work directly with a technical founder who’s still hands-on.
  • Build systems used across multiple real-world software companies.
  • Shape the early phase of a growing engineering team.
  • High autonomy, clear priorities, and technical mentorship.
  • Competitive compensation for Poland-based talent.
Your Profile
  • Strong technical foundation; comfortable coding in at least two modern languages.
  • Track record of delivering production systems independently.
  • Experience across varied environments (consulting, freelance, agency, or startup).
  • Curious and active in AI-assisted development (e.g., Copilot, Claude, Cursor, self-hosted LLMs).
  • Experience building or integrating around OpenAI, Claude, Vertex AI, or similar — a plus.
  • Pragmatic, tool-agnostic approach to solving problems.
  • Comfortable in a small, distributed, high-autonomy environment.
Must have
  • Strong technical foundation; production experience in at least two modern languages.
  • Proven ability to deliver complete systems independently.
  • Experience across varied environments (consulting, freelance, agency, or startup).
  • Curiosity and hands-on experience with AI-assisted development (e.g., Copilot, Claude, or LLM coding tools).
  • Pragmatic, tool-agnostic mindset; ability to learn fast and adapt to new environments.
  • Fluent English and clear communication in distributed teams.
Nice to have
  • Experience building or integrating around LLMs (OpenAI, Claude, Vertex AI, or self-hosted).
  • Familiarity with DevOps and cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
  • Experience mentoring developers or coordinating small teams.
  • Knowledge of both modern and legacy tech stacks (.NET, Clarion, Python, React, etc.).
Responsibilities
  • Building and deploying internal tools and infrastructure for investment and portfolio teams.
  • Leading or supporting AI-first initiatives (LLM workflows, automation, intelligent data integration).
  • Working with portfolio companies on short, high-impact projects — e.g., testing frameworks, AI integrations, or modernization efforts.
  • Evaluating and integrating new technologies pragmatically, based on business need.
  • Operating across varied stacks (Python, .NET, TypeScript, etc.) and cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure).
  • Contributing to architecture, standards, and team development as the group scales.
